  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

250-500cc Pwk on Wr250...can't start it

I just dropped a new PWK/JD in my '04 WR250 and I cannot get it to start.

It started fine with the TMX, now all i get is a 2 second run then stall. I pull the plug and it is all wet with gas. Choke or no choke no difference.

I've tried a 45/48 and 42 pilot with AS settings from 1/2 to 3 tuns and it is all the same. 185 and 180 mains...no difference. There is a JD blue needle in it now on the 4th clip.

The float height was .630 I lowered it to .680 and it seems a little better but still no start, just a little fire and then stall.

I've put 3 plugs in it with the same results.

Does anyone have any ideas? Does anyone know the corret float height?

Tomorrow I'll take it out and put the TMX back if I can't get it to run.

Thanks!

We spoke on the phone about this and am totally puzzled. I don't understand it. Your right on with jetting and float height. If it does not work out send it back, no big deal. i would like to see if the carb has a flaw in the casting or something up?

Mine did the same when i got it new.
Im sure your trouble is the idle screw (black one).
On my new PWK, i need to turn in a few turn to start the bike.
Also, make sure your cable is tight.

It aint the idle screw.

I tuned it in and out.

It soaked the plug with gas so bad it never ran for more than 2 sec...choke or no choke with 3 brand new plugs,

I put the TMX back in and it started 2nd kick w/o choke and blubbered for a solid minute to burn off all the gas from 10 kicks with the PWK.
Smoked like heck too.

Runs fine now.

Kelly, I'll send it back tomorrow,

There must be something wrong with the needle and seat or float if it's doing that.

One of the first things i asked him. Does not overflow when leaned over. the overflow hose is not kinked or anything right?

False alarm!

It started.

Indeed he was RIGHT. I stand corrected. The slide was closed.

When I bottomed the idle screw it was already so flooded it would not start. Then I turned it back out again.

When I took it out I noticed the pilot hole was behind the slide and it was drawing only gas with the slide full closed.

I turned it in 4ish turns but it was not enough.

I had to turn it about 10 turns to open the slide.

Anyway, It runs now and seems right with the 42 pilot.

I'm going to try to jet it this afternoon.

It barely fits in the boots but it does go.

Thanks all!

That's good. hrc630 is right, they take a lot of idle screw to run right. Mine starts best when the idle is set to the high side. If not, you have a crack the throttle open just a bit.

It is not hype.

The low end low mid is WAAAY better. much more tractible with a 42 pilot.

I can easily loft the front end over logs and such that before might have the motor fall on it's face. It used to chug good but not like this!
I can run it to zero rpm in 3rd and just open the throttle and it runs perfect.

Top end is similar but the upper mid is a little raspy before it cleans out. it was hot today so the 180 main may be a little big?
