  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Power Up Kit Question

pcross71

Husqvarna
AA Class
Just picked up a new leftover 2008 TE 450 and am breaking in before installing the power up kit (i'm told it includes an arrow can, o2 plug and derestricts the intake - correct?). A friend that has a power'd 2009 TE 510 has suffered with very limited range on standard tank of gas. Has anyone kept the O2 sensor in place (and therefore not put map over to race mode) but opened the intake and replaced exhaust? Is that a happy medium between power and mileage? As is there is a bit of bog off the bottom and the top end power feels limited on-road (passing a car from 60mph is dicey).
Thanks for the help!

You could adjust the settings in the ecu with an ibeat, your dealer might have one of those. That might help with your performance issues.

Call Halls in IL and ask if your VIN number might need an ecu flash upgrade.

My guess would be your friend may not have the fuel pump pick up all the way into the bottom of the tank, that could be changed by opening up the tank/fuel pump and making sure it is in the correct place.

Thanks for the info - guess i'll go with the full power up and try to optimize mileage. Will call Halls in the AM - is the flash for 2008 models? Is the flash just a typical refresh or something significant? BTW, bought from MotoFIT in Connecticut and they have been terrific. Some not so positive things on the web on them, but guess it's typical internet noise from an isolated customer. If anyone is looking for a KTM & Husky dealer in NE they're worth checking out.

There was an upgrade for the non-610 2008s, and... the 2010 250 efi bikes? 2009 was ok, but ask halls to be sure, I am getting old.

Simple mail it to them, they upgrade it, and mail it back. That should make the fueling much better and more predictable. If you have a 2008, you could really benefit from a power commander V and Auto tune module for even better mileage. I would have mentioned that earlier but you mentioned wanting to keep it in closed loop (non-race) mode.

Thanks - will reach out to my dealer and see if they can flash while doing the power up so i don't lose ride time mailing the ECU.
Also thanks for the info on Power Commander - searched and read your posts of last summer - good stuff! Any update on availability for 2008 TE's (from what i read you had to order for a 2009) or is that a confirmed non-issue? I think my order will be to break-in as is, power up after 500 miles or so, then do the PC V + AT sometime down the line. Is the benefit of the PC power or fuel economy / range or both?
One other question on the PU: does the arrow can come with a spark arrestor? DB Killer?
Thanks for all the help.

I bought a TE250 new in 1/08 and after the power-up kits became available, I put it on - if I remember correctly, the new Arrow muffler had a spark arrester already in it, but a snap-ring is all that keeps it in, so you can remove it if you want.

Coffee - I did the 300 upgrade and kept my old 250 ECU and added a PCIII to adjust the fuel map for optimum performance (running without my O2 sensor). I have no problems with it now, and without anything to compare to, feel the bike rips, but you mention a "reflash" as a performance/fuel economy improvement. Would that still be valid in my situation (PCIII)?? I hate to mess with anything now because I guess I'd have to recreate my mapping that I have dialed in so perfectly.

The 2008 power up Arrow can does not come with a SA or db killer. You can transfer the stock one over from the stock pipe to the PU Arrow can.

For a 2008, order a PCV for a 2009. It will work for sure other than the usual need to dial in the map for your particular bike. The benefit of a PC depends on how good or bad the bike is without it. If it's already running well, it won't make much difference. IMO the biggest improvement is in eliminating dead or flat spots in the powerband. So, throttle response improves.

My 2008 510 came with the newer ECU program, so I didn't have to reflash it. If I already had a PCIII dialed in I might not want to mess with it. For sure you'd have to redo the PCIII map after the update. Your choice I guess.

This guy has given good answers.

All the power commander does is add or subtract injector pulse width. All the Auto tune does is create a map for the power commander. Which is extremely important is not required.

If a bike is running fine, then I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks to both jlk_250 and Coffee...I was hoping you'd say that, but just didn't know if the reflash-thing was important enough to warrent the rework on my maps since it's obviously the old original ECU program.

You should probably call Halls and see if your vin # was in the batch that could benefit from a ecu re-flash. But if it is running well I probably would not worry about it.

Well you were both right...I called Halls (nice guys there - never dealt with them before) and yes, my VIN says it would benefit from the reflash, but he too said that if it's running good with the PCIII I should let it alone. Thanks everyone.
