• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Power Dynamo retrofit

AA Class
I recently lost all the sparks out of my mini 6 on my '87 WR430. Checked in to repairs/replacement and ended up at Power Dynamo's website. Ordered their kit 71 25 799, the A/C unit for $313 (all up price including a flywheel puller and shipping to USA). It took all of an hour to install and works great! I didn't have starting issue before and my power budget for lights was inline with the output of the motoplat so I can't say I see much differences between the two systems. My lights seem a bit brighter but I don't ride after dark much so I can't say for sure. The bike is still a one or two kick affair and doesn't offer to kickback. Timing is set to ~ 1.5mm BTDC. Seems a great price for a new direct replacement ignition. 10 days from order to finished install.

I totally agree with you. Mine arrived from Germany within 7 days. I fitted it to my 390 Auto a few months ago. Fitted within about an hour (except for the wiring for the lights). Timing set to 1.9mm BTDC. Starts perfectly and runs superb. I opted for the DC kit as we have to have a working horn in the UK to be road legal and the DC horns take less current than an AC one. The regulator / rectifier was a bit too bulky to go under the tank, so I mounted it above the airbox. I had a photographer complain to me at the weekend that my headlight was too bright and caused issues with him taking a picture ......

I have another one to fit to my 390WR 6 speed when I can get around to it.

sounds like a good option. other than them being old, the motoplats only real weakness is the lighting output...which sucks.

Darren.
TIMING IS SET TO ABOUY 1,5 MM BTDC
Its dangerous to me, the motor can overheat under 1.9 mm.....
Just be carefull please.

really? have always run my big bore swedes with backed off timing 1.5-2.0 btdc...no problems.
you are saying he needs to advance the timing to cool the engine?
lots of us here retard the timing a bit to help with easier starting and less kickback.

I'll keep an eye on the coolant; this scooter hasn't offered to overheat as yet. I find it doesn't kick back at this setting.

Changed the H4 bulb out for a brighter halogen unit and rode this evening. Amazing how much easier it is to ride at night when you can actually see. Super bright! Easy starter hot or cold. Life is good!

Grouty,

I have a 1982 420 AE that is nearly impossible to start cold - although it will start hot.
I tried a Power Dynamo ignition and then an Electrex Works ignition.
The bike has a NOS barrel and new pistion which makes it a 390 now.
I have replaced the ignition side crankshaft seal
I have not split the cases yet, so I'm not sure what the drive side crank seal is like.
I have also replaced the carburetor with a new one and changed jetting etc.

I'm interested in your comment that your 390 starts perfectly.

Is it possible that I could call you and talk about this?

Simon.

Yeah, a call is no problem. Just remember that I'm in the UK :) I will PM my number to you.
Out of interest, what timing did you set it to ? Carb ? Is it a Mikuni ? (I hate them , but they work fine). Have you done a leak down test ?

Ian,

Got you email - many thanks.

hows your compression? also check your choke circuit. try tipping the bike over on one side to prime it. float level can be important with cold starts.

your fuel tap isn't leaking and filling your engine with fuel (like mine does). If it doesn't light up in 2 - 4 kicks with choke, I turn it off and go full throttle andkick like mad. 10 - 15 kicks shes away but sprays fuel out the exhaust.
