  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Potential new TE310 owner

A Class
I've read a ton of threads about the TE310 in the past few days since I found one for sale, both on this forum and others.

A younger me would have already pulled the plug and have the bike, but the older me is trying to do due diligence and not make an impulse buy. Everything I've read seems perfect about this bike. I've been riding since I was 13 and have had my share of old RMs, CRs, KXs, etc. I had a handful of RD350 2-strokers, a Ducati Multistrada, and I rode a 2-stroke 1964 Vespa kitted out to 225ccs and capable of 90mph from Portland OR to NY, NY in 2006.

I haven't lived in an area conducive to off-road riding in the past few years (not without trailering for hours) but now I live in Montana and the trails are screaming my name and I'm looking to get out on them.

The local dealer here is selling a 2013 TE310. It has the power up kit, the upgraded pipe, ECU mapping, etc. It has 240 miles only. The dealer is asking $6995. I am not sure I can get him down much farther but I was thinking of offering $6500 and maybe getting him to throw in some gear (helmet, boots) to sweeten the deal.

It -seems- like a great deal considering the upgrades and that it only has 240 miles but I'm looking for confirmation of that. It would not be used for commuting, but maybe grocery getting or making a run to the video store (yes we still have video stores in Montana). It would be used mainly to get to trails (I live right on the Continental Divide so I can go from 5300' to 7000' in 10 minutes. I like the fuel injection aspect of this because I've spent years rejetting carbs on 2-strokes. I could spend up to an hour getting to some other trails or I could throw it in the truck I guess.

I haven't ridden off-road in quite some time other than 3-wheelers so I'm pretty sure it is more off-road capable than I am. I know I could get a new Honda 230 or a Yamaha 400 or something that's more on-road capable but a pig off-road.

Help me make the right decision? I love the bike but I really want to know if I'd be getting a good buy at that $6900 price point.

Thanks,

Others chime in, but I paid 7K (taxes not included) for a brand new 2013 including Power Up installed by my dealer. The 12 is the black head, big block I think, and maybe that's not so bad for real dual sport use. 7K though sounds a bit high. My bike is a 13 and I've had Zip Ty do some work to it so my overall cost is higher. However, the bike feels like it is going to be exactly what I wanted. Any fears that the close ratio box was going to be an issue on commutes too and from the trail have evaporated; with the wheels balanced I can cruise at 55 or 60 (47 tooth rear) at a relaxed rpm level and very low vibrations too. 'Love my 310R!

That's way to much money especially for a 2012. I would call dealers that ship like Bills Motorcycles Plus and Halls. If you decide to get it don't just count on the power up being everything you hope. Make sure it has a TXC ECU and Injector or you'll spend a ton more money. Awesome choice in bike just not at that price

AbnMike, I agree with Kenneth. That sounds a bit high for a 2012. The 13/14's have some substantial upgrades - most notably the Red Head & Keihin FI.

I paid just under $6,500 for a 2014 with zero miles, power-up, remap, etc. Picked it up in Oklahoma and had to pay about $450 for TTL when I brought it home to Texas.

I think there are still too many good deals to be had on new 13/14's to pay more for a used 2012 model.

If your plans include more than just occasional street duty the 511 would be a better choice. Hall's Husqvarna has one new 2014 TE511 listed for $6,999.

If you'd be content to "throw it in the truck" Hall's have a new 2013 TXC310R for $5,499. The $1,500 savings would certainly cover any shipping costs with plenty left over to buy some goodies - hand guards, skid plate, new riding gear...

Frankly, this is the route I wish I'd taken. While the idea of being able to legally ride an off road racing bike to the track or trails sounds awesome in theory the reality of it is quite different.

First time out on my TE we'd just had a heavy rain. Bike caked in mud. Upon landing a medium size jump the extra weight caused the rear black fender thingy to break. It, along with the rear turn signals and license plate got chewed up and spit out the back wheel. One of the front turn signals got snagged by a vine and broke.

I initially repaired the damage made some mods to make it more durable but in the end I basically converted to a TXC removing all the street legal stuff and replacing them with the TXC number plate and rear fender.

I'm either getting smarter, lazier, or both as I get older. Whichever, I now much prefer hauling my 310 to its off road destination - along with a well-stocked cooler, a proper tool box (instead of tool pouch), a stand, gas jug, etc. Best of all, after a hard day of riding it's wonderful to get out of my sweaty gear, put on some shorts and a clean t-shirt, slip into my Crocs, pour myself a beverage, put the AC on Max, punch up some tunes, and have a comfortable drive home.

Here's a CycleTrader link to all the new 310's still available: http://www.cycletrader.com/Husqvarn...r=2013:2014&modelkeyword=1&sort=featured:desc

There are still a few new TE310R's available for less than $6K but you'll probably have to do some driving or pay for shipping. Still better and less expensive than paying $6,900 for a used 2012.

I've attached couple of pictures of my setup - here in street legal trim because I was hauling it to Austin for the MotoGP races. I had a pass to a ride a lap around the Circuit of the Americas but it had to be on a street legal/plated bike.

Good luck in search.

2011 was the first year for the 310 x-lite.

It has the TXC ECU and the injector. Dealer has dropped the price to $6800 out the door (all inclusive) and will give me $150 off a helmet and boot set. I'm going to test ride a TE511 today that is also a 2012 at the same price point (a bit higher) but with 2500 miles on it. I think that's going to be too much bike for what I'm seeking as I want something really flickable, but we'll see. Most of the TE511's up here are sold and converted to snow bikes.

"Also - do the 2014's need to be derestricted, power upped, etc, etc like the 2012 did? "

No, not in the same way and less costly. You DON'T need the injector and ECU (and don't need any jumper or removal of the 02 sensor). The 13/14 simply needs a map flash and some deristricting. It is easy and cheap to do. The '12 was Mikuni and the latter Keihin. '13 and '14 models also include a real sump drain plug with a magnet.

One of our local riders has just about decided to sell his KTM 525 and go to a new 310R. He is an older rider, like me, and wants something really flickable. I expect him to swing by here soon to check out my now fully awake 310. It really is a great bike for the kind of riding Mike describes.

I have the 2012 te 310 with 700 fun dirt miles on it , price is probably high cause he is probably a smaller dealer and not that many dealers in your area , good luck and have fun .

I went ahead and bit the bullet and purchased the one I was looking at originally. The TE511 is way too much for me, heck even at my limited abilities now the TE310 is more than I can handle but I put 4 or so hours on it on the trails behind my house this weekend and love it. I could have spent more time looking around but Richard nailed it - small dealer, not many options around here in my area. Dealer got me into new MX boots and two Fox helmets (one for me, one for the wife) and I was out the door at $6800. Bike definitely has all the upgrades, power up, injector, etc, etc. It's very forgiving but after 20 years of riding street only there's a lot for me to relearn - have to get comfortable with standing, putting my legs out, etc, etc.

I thought about the dirt only option, but only have one truck between us so I want to be able to get to trails to ride for hours but be able to leave the truck with the wife if she's not coming with me (she has a small 200 cc 2 wheel drive four wheeler and we have a 3 wheeler as well).

Hope these photos upload Husky 1.jpgHusky 2.jpgPintler.jpg as i don't have any photo site sharing accounts, but there are miles and miles of track, all open, no restrictions right behind my house accessed through 2 minutes on hardtop.

Awesome , enjoy your new ride , and if u ever have any questions or problems hit these guys up , I have have learned alot about this bike and riding myself .

Also - do the 2014's need to be derestricted, power upped, etc, etc like the 2012 did?
Yes but they absolute rip !
I had a 2010, hated it, got a 14 model and it hauls ass ! :)

There's a video on another page here if you want to see and hear what it's like ! Love it !

Ps, those hills look very good ! :)
