• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

POD Mod with 2" Filter instead of 2.25"

Greetings all.

I cut open the airbox last week to see if everything was sealing properly. Inside of the airbox and throttle body has a thick layer of grime. This is at only 4200 miles!

I ordered the filter from Amazon and everything else from http://intakehoses.com/ - I had never used them before but their product and shipping were excellent!

Most installs I've seen use a 2.25" filter and elbow. I switched it up a little and used a 2" filter, 2" intake tube and 2"-2.25" reducer/elbow. The 2" Uni Filter is actually 1/2" smaller in diameter than the 2.25" filter so it fits in the airbox a lot easier.

The key to using a 2" filter is the 2"-2.25", 90 degree elbow/reducer. I've never seen an elbow like this before. I used a carbon fibre pipe to connect to the filter.

No ride report yet as the bike is still in pieces from other issues.

Best regards,
Matt

Took the Husky out for a blast on Friday. OMG the sound is CRAZY!!!

I had never done/heard a bike a intake before. Only car intakes. Car intakes usually make a lot of "sucking" noises because it's a big engine breathing thru a small tube.

The Pod Mod makes BASS! The tone from the bike intake is much deeper than that of a car and the airbox must serve as a resonator because it is loud at full throttle. There is little to no noise at idle and mild throttle but it builds the bass quickly if you pin the throttle. I LOVE it.

No noticeable performance gain or loss. Pod filter should do a better job of keeping dirt out of the engine this summer. I'm going to run like this for a couple of weeks and then get the ECU recall done.

Taking this to the next level with some airbox modifications.

I had the fuel tank out so I was able to remove the remainder of the airbox top.

Due to the high heat the Uni filter had leaked out a bunch of "sticky" filter oil.

IMG_7200_Matt.jpg

The PCV area was very dirty and oily. Standing oil in the airbox is never a good thing.

Solving the PCV problem means installing a filter.

Introducing: The smallest catch can I could find on ebay!

I added a port on the airbox to run compatible tubing.

I then decided to tackle the problem of heat soaking the airbox. :banghead:

I cut out the mount for the stock intake temp sensor and fiberglassed over the hole.

Then I got busy with the Thermo-Tec heat barrier.

I forgot that I also relocated the IAT sensor.

I used this space on the other side of the box. Just drilled a hole and wiggled the sensor through.

It really is a tight fit. Even with the smaller 2" filter.

IMG_7299_Matt.jpg

It's also important to get a filter with an angled base.

Tight.

What is with having the Catch can blocking half the Air Intake? Surely it is not necessary to have it there?

Some of those who have done the Pod Mod have found it beneficial to have a primary filter across the original air intake so they can whip it out and change it keeping the Pod Filter inside a lot cleaner.

I put the catch can there to there to hide it. It is not necessary to have it there.

It looks like plenty of airflow to me as the the throttle body diameter appears to be the limit of what the engine can flow.

A mesh filter to keep bugs and leaves out makes sense but anything finer than that will reduce flow. My 2" UNI filter already has a red pre filter and black internal filter. I think the filtration is already at a very high level.

Why, if Pod Mod has been done, bother sealing airbox? You would not even need to put "roof" back on except to avoid water egress. One could drill the roof like swiss cheese allowing better airflow and any heating issues. Am I missing something??

Oh, an aside to our American friends...does having a TR650 help deal with US politics..? Just asking.:D
