• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Plating a TXC 250 in CA?

Can anyone provide feedback on feasibility and cost of getting a 2009 TXC 250 plated in California?

Not something I would recommend attempting for many reasons.. It was extremely problematic when I plated a dirt bike 6 years ago.. and things have only gotten worse since then.

Thing is, even if you do get a plate, they could pull it at any time..

they have been pinging vin numbers that are not hiway coded. TXC is not hiway coded in its vin. enter the dmv world at your own risk.

Not gonna happen for you in any practical sense of the word. There is a way to do it under the law of special construction (and no, I don't don't know anything about that procedure, so please don't ask). I know a guy who had three 2010 KTM EXC300 two strokes licensed here in California, but he has more money (LITERALLY) and time than he knows what to do with. For real world people, this won't happen. You can't even get a bike from out of state that has already been plated and get it plated in this state. A friend of mine ran to buy a KDX200 with a plate, not realizing that a South Dakota plate wasn't going to get him anything more than a green sticker. I owned a KDX with a plate on it and sold it to somebody a couple of years ago. He sold it to another guy who was going to move to Texas. I was quick to buy the bike back before it got reregistered in another state.

It can be done. It's called a dual registration. Unfortunately, the people that know how to do it aren't talking. I have a friend that has plated all of his dirt bikes and still won't tell me how to do it. So basically, if you don't already know how, nobody's going to tell.

And as for the same reasons Darkside mentions....one should not discuss openly on Forums as there ARE Trolls here from states motor vehicle bureaus. Best to take offline or PM at best.

The good news is that there are actual dirt bikes with factory license plates for sale now. Husqvarna started doing that in 2006, ktm in 2007, and there may be others.

Pre-2006 in California those options were not available, not really.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the feedback. It's pretty much inline with what I expected, but figured it was worth a shot. If any of you have successful personal experience to share, feel free to PM me. Thanks again!

There is nothing secret about dual registration. My KLX300 was registered that way in 2006, but it could not be done today.

I have a 02 YZ 250 two stroke that is dual registered in Cal. But it was done before the cut off. Try doing a search for Dual Sport Guys. I used them for my 05 WR 450 but never got around to getting the bike plated before I sold it.
