  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

FE/FC Picked up my 2017 701 Enduro

Well, just picked up my 2017 701 Enduro. Awesome machine, can definitely feel the effect of the second counter balancer over the 16 model (not huge but noticeable). Obviously running it in so not pushing it too hard but it is absolutely lovely. I'll post an update when I get more miles on it.

Oh, forgot to mention. The mirrors suck serious ass, cant see a bloody thing behind you. Any suggestions on a good set that let you actually see what's behind you and can fold in for off road?

I probably have seen some of the little ones. I would think the trail should be called the middle size and the enduro called the little one. The enduros I have entered would have more vegetation to brush against than trails that are open without special event permission. More likely to fall over per mile ridden as well. Maybe things are different at higher elevations in Colorado.

Putting weight in the end of the bar and touching the mirror when desired to see better are kind of standard things to do.

I'm thinking of getting one of these.

Does it have the adjustable power modes, using the little clicker dial under the seat like the 2016's did?

How does it run stock? I know the 350/450/500 come very lean and guys go about desmogging, remapping, and/or running a tuner ... that needed on the 701?

How's the suspension? I had a '14 with a 4CS fork and hated it! But seems the 701 has a shorter travel, specific valving 4CS, is it ok?

Thanks

Hey usedtobefast, no the 2017 does not have the adjustable power modes. It runs hard in stock trim. The only thing I have done so far is a wings exhaust which runs WAY cooler than stock. I have heard that they run a little lean but not sure if this is also the case with the 2017. I do know from my research that a airbox mod, full system and ecu flash pushes it to a new level, but quite frankly it goes hard as it is. The suspension is WP and I find it excellent, I am 200 pounds and 6 feet tall. I dont think the suspension travel is lacking either however it may need a revalve depending on what type of riding you do. As an overall opinion - I FREAKIN LOVE THIS BIKE - I have a 2013 ZX14R as a road bike and I have not touched it since I bought this bike. It is so much fun on and off road, its road manners are excellent and it handles brilliantly! Best bike I've bought to date (and I have had a ton of them).

Hey Ray; Please keep updating us on how the bike is going, what updates you put on and please list issues and resolutions. I am coming around to this type of bike-I have had a TE 630 and now a SWM 650, but me thinks a higher tech bike might do the business. I now live in the Vic high country (ex Sydney) so heaps of excuses to haul out on a 701.

Thanks in advance

Any notable differences between the TE630 and the SWM 650?

A ton more power than the TE630 and feels much lighter too. The TE630 was a good bike however not as competent in the dirt, cant comment on the SWM 650 as I have never ridden it.

Well first service and ECU update out of the way. Bike is great fun, realised only the other day the Wings exhaust has a removable baffle (doh), sounds very throaty without it in. Full consumption has been good (not that I particularly care). Really haven't had any issues at all, its just a really fun bike to ride. I am doing about 80/20 road/dirt at the moment, it is really comfortable on the road and manages highway speeds without issue. The stock tires seem to handle the road very well but the dirt not so much, my assessment is that although they are DOT approved nobby tires they are really an 70/30 road/dirt option, which suits me fine as that's about the mix of riding I do.

Yeah I actually just removed the 2 screws under the tail and removed that giant plate mount. I re mounted that license plate light under the tail to add some visibility at night. Then just re mount your plate and your all done. IMG_9873.JPG

I hope you are liking the 701, I am really thinking about one. I was very disappointed by the 4cs on my TE300 and I don't want to face the same issues with the 701. What do you think of the suspension? That's the one reason I haven't bought one yet.

Compared to my te300 it is very stiff but not to bad after some adjustments. I stiffened my TE up a little bit and it helped a lot! There is definitely a place for both bikes IMO, I'd keep your te and pick up a 701 for the longer rides!!IMG_9794.JPG

Thanks for the reply, I had Kreft do my forks on the TE and I'm really happy with them. When I get the 701 I'm sure I will have the suspension done at some point. I just didn't want to have to do it first thing.

Oh she's more then capable right out of the crate! Got about 2,000 on the 701 mostly rugged dirt trails and she does great!IMG_9778.JPG
