  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

OUCH! My bike tried to break me!

Beautiful Spring morning, got my Helmet, Jacket, and Gloves on ready to ride to work. Jumped aboard, Flicked out the Kick starter, pulled the cold start lever and filled the bottom jet with fuel. Then comes the fun bit. Stand on the right peg, balance left foot on the kicker, push down.

Bike half fires and throws the kicker straight back at me with all my weight still going down and results in a sprained ankle and the spring loaded kick stand lifting. Ended up with me and my bike both on the ground.

I had to push it up the road (limping), up a hill in order to roll start it.

Not a great way to start the morning!:banghead:

yep, Its called kick-back and apparently much of this has been eliminated though the years with the engines as this was a common occurance with starting a bike (ESP big bores) back in the 70s when I was first riding ...

Try kicking a 500 2 stroke over the kick back could deffinetly break your leg or ankle if you are not carefull. Boots help alottt for kickstarts.

I had my work boots on. Going to buy some Fox Comp 5 Shorty's on Friday. Hopefully that will help!

back in the day...

YZ465, nice day, getting ready to hit the trail, skinny kid (me) stand on bike stand and kick, pop, knee into bottom side of handlebar, swear the limp around a while. Go push start it so that does not happen again.

Good times for sure. :)

1995 KTM RXC 620

Manual decompression lever to aid in setting TDC for kick start, no E-start back then on the big bore KTM's. And it was a left kicker to boot.

Set TDC (or so I thought, was slightly before), kicked, fired back wards and the kick start lever flew up, hit my heel and wrenched my ankle. Within 2 minutes, swelled up like a grape fruit. Could hardly get the boot off.

Doctor said I would have faired better if I broke it, would have healed faster.

I love my e-start on a 4 stroke. Don't leave home without it!

Fox Comp 5 Shorty's

My 2cents. I read up on the shorty boots awhile back. I remember reading the Fox shorty's top velcro can get sloppy and be a pain. I bought the black Thor 50/50 boots and I love them. I bought them for the overnight DS rides, and even wore them on a 510 ride once.

My dad had his leg injured by a TT500 and I knew a guy who got his leg broken by a KTM 495.
Anyway, my TC510 has kicked back on me a half a dozen times...really blows when it happens.

I'll check them out. Thanks for the heads up.

Purchased Thor 50/50's hopefully good for a ride this weekend.
Would I be a big girl (no offence) if I got my mate to kick my bike for me??

No you would be a little girl ... If you can't crank it, don't ride it ... I saw many get mauled cranking big bores .... that is one of the reasons I ride <= 250s to date ...

man the 85 500XC was terrible if you didnt kick it like a 4 stroke...dont know how many D37 starts I started with a goose egg on my knee from the handlebars....

The last guys I rode with that had a 500, carried a rope with them to start the bike ..both in the parking lot and woods ... and their right boot had holes in the sole from kicking the bike ....

I love my bike. The kick start has never bothered me til now. I generally kick it first go everytime. I went for a quick run on Tuesday with a mate on his Triumph Daytona 675, through roundabouts and small straights he was stuggling to keep up, I wasn't even on the throttle too hard, To add insult to injury, I bought the Husky off him and he regrets it!
When I get back on it next week I hope the boots provide enough support to hopefully limit this Ankle Swelling Pain in the A$$ in the future.

I blew my car up today and it is going to the wrecking yard! At least I have my bike to get to work, I just need to stand beside it and kick it with my right foot!
