    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Options for Dirt Wheel / Tire Setup for 2010 SM510??

We installed the Avon Distanzas and I can't say enough good things about them. We ran the NJ Pine Barrens 300 mile ride this weekend through all kinds of crazy deep sand, wet, puddles, mud - and while the Distanza is not a full knobby it hooked up amazingly well for a dual sport tire. I was really, really impressed. Given the light weight of the Husky and ridiculous power I was able to get through sections that guys on XR 650s and KTMs with full off road knobbies were having trouble crossing. The distanzas rock.

That said I'm still looking for a 21" off road knobby for any deep sand rides since the 17" Distanza is a bit slippery in deep sand or really wet mud and the 17" wheel is definitely not optimal for off roading in general.

What are my options? Can I just buy a full stock setup from a 2010 TE 510 with wheel / hub / rotor / tire and slap those on?

Is there a cheaper way to just run a 21" front knobby? If I don't have to I probably wouldn't even change the rear wheel since the 17" with the Distanza hooked up incredibly well on anything I could throw at it. But the 17" front tire is not great in real off road conditions.

Quick anser is NO.
After all the hassle ive been thru with getting a replacement SM hub. The 2 front hubs are not compatible, and it seems that the dirt hub is much more common than the SM hub for non OEM. Your going to have to get a new (replacement) front hub and lace on a 21" rim, and you'll have to use that 320mm disc unless you replace the fork tubes as well with a set from a TE or TC.
You can call Factory Pro Racing for a front hub approx $350 (http://www.factoryproracing.com/).

Did you know you can get new OEM hubs for way less than the factory pro ones ?

Really? DOH! (but how about availability?)
Well, that also includes spoke kit. Damn this front wheel has turned into a financial fiasco! LOL
And i can turn my TC250 into a SM machine now :banghead:
 
Note that it is nearly impossible to run a 21" front with the 320mm rotor and the 2010 SMR 450 has a shortened swingarm so you can't fit a dirt wheel on the rear either. Run the distenza's on the 17's and if you want true dirt bike performance, buy a cheap dirt bike. You'll thank yourself in the end since it's a total nightmare to put dirt wheels on a SMR.

Thanks...that is probably very good advice. Thing is I need a street legal bike to get to the trails and from one trail to the other where I ride so I'm gonna do some research before giving up on the idea of a knobby on the SM 510. I love the Avon Distanza for 90% of my riding (mostly hard pack, light sand, lots of streets in between) but just need something to get admitted to full on trail rides that require DOT knobbies.

What do you guys think of this setup that WoodsChick is running?

Hey Silver...this is exaclty why I bought TE 510 and got SM wheels :) still have issues with fitting 320 mm brake disk to SM wheels, so i ride it with dirt rotor for now..
next time you go to barrens, or anywhere else in NJ area, give me a shout!!! I love that place (but hate the sand)
 
You bet... We will be doing some LI pine barren rides this summer. Need to learn the area a bit but I know there is a ton of good riding out there.
 
Live in NYC, but we just bought a new 3 rail trailer so we'll be riding a bunch of places in NJ, Long Island, Upstate - wherever we can go
 
New lost trails park should open up this weekend!

I have 2 bike trailer.

Keep me in mind when you go out. I m 15 min across from GW.
 
Definitely will...there is a small chance I might try and do a ride tomorrow if the pipes come back in time (sent them out to get gutted and powder coated). If not, lets get something on the calendar for next weekend or later in May. I think we're going to try and learn some trails out east in the SH area. In light or no traffic we make it out there in about 1hr 20m so not bad for some good riding. I'll PM you my email as well.
 
Anyone else come up with a solution here since this thread has now been dormant for almost a year? If not looks like I'll be getting a street legal TE or KTM for dirt trips and keep the SMR clean and street only.

KS9 - Lets get out for some riding this April / May. Trying to put together a small group of guys to meet up a few times before summer starts and the beach gets in the way of weekend riding trips.
