    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Ok is there any advantage with a 5 speed cr tranny vs a 6 speed cr tranny?

In a hare scramble in the woods or on a vintage MX track with a 430 or 500 engine.

If you had a choice?
 
What do you mean by a 6 speed cr tranny?

I would choose which ever one sheds the least metal parts to the magnet.

I did the ratios for the four speed vs the 400,430,500 wr,xc and it was just like gears 2,3,4,5. Is the 5 speed just like no extra low first the spacing the same otherwise. If that is the case then it is a matter of a stronger transmission vs one that is easier to find parts for.

If you don't ride over the road to the trails there really isn't a need/advantage for six I would imagine though it is kind of fun to lug the engine down real low in high gear. So if you made first the same there is a sound advantage to the six speed. If you make 5th equal 6th then there is an advantage pushing with the six speed.

I couldn't tell you if one shifts easier.
 
I have 6speed cr gear and 5speed cr gear sets. I was wondering if one has an advantage over the other. I know with my 390cr 6 speed I would burp it in the short trails between turns and wind her up in the straights. Would the 5 speed cr be quicker because she winds up to 5th gear quicker?

I never was in this position before were I had a choice.
 
With the same crank and same flywheel on the ignition and the same overall gearing I fail to see how one would be quicker than the other. There may be some advantage to the two gears in the transmission being real close to each other in size where one rides it the hardest. If the 5 speed one has larger engagement dogs where you shift most that could be of benefit. We are talking 30 year old stuff so condition may well be more important. You are not coming out and saying how the gear spreads are or which transmissions are from the 250 bikes. I asked once before for the number on a third gear, that and counting teeth is the way to tell.
 
One must inspect this old stuff closely. I never seen a tranny break on me with the older or newer cases. But I check the oil constantly. Once the gears run with no oil they heat up and crystallize then fracture. To me the whole gear set is scrap. But most of the gear sets I have seen seem to have little wear. The Black color from the hardening is still present. These trannys have been used for many decades past the early 80's.
