    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

On 85/86 500, is CR Gas Tank Narrower Too????

Just getting re-focused back on my '85 500XC project bike. The gas tank is I'd say average as far as being discolored. The thing that is catching my attention is how wide the tank looks immediately where the seat starts up the tank. I look down at the foot pegs, and I'm imagining the tank possibly making my knees sore if riding with leathers that don't have good knee padding.

I have noticed in pics, that the CR500 tank for 85/86 is clearly shorter, above the emblem location. Just wondering if the CR tank is perhaps narrower than the XC tank as well???? Was thinking for shorter rides, and tracks, I'd sure love a more narrow tank. Can also see they big time addressed that very area on the 87+ design change.

I just so happened to be wandering aound ebay and found a tank for those for 99 cents and $15 for shiping which no one bid on yet ebay stuck these two items on the same page in the bottom which cost $100. Kind of amusing. I would post the picture I made in paint of a side by side comparison but that might violate some rule.

You can make your own conclusion there is definatly a difference above the logo but I really don't see how you could get much narrower without a different seat.

I am going to play Devil's Advocate here by giving you my interpretation of what the chap means by this. I believe his statement "by those in the know" is complimenting the knowledge of all the users of this forum rather than seeking the help of only those who know the answer to his question. I may be wrong, but this is how I read it.

Murph, I think that you may have hit the nail directly on the head with your thought and interpretation.

CH and it's members tend to pride themselves on being helpfull to all regardless of experience, age or ability and even brand of bike.... in the most sincere of ways and especially during the Holiday Season I thank you for reminding all of us about that.

That is exactly how I meant it. As I am very new to Husky's. Have always wanted one, but effectively brand new to the scene. So, not to hard to be more in the know than me, on the subject.

Sorry for any confusion. Was useing wording I picked up many years ago, from one of the bike makes, either DB or MXA.

Those in the know =, with more knowledge than I.

I have an 85 CR and an 86 WR & XC and the tanks are definately different. you are correct in thinking the CR tanks are narrower, they are also not as tall as the WR/XC tanks, nor do they hold as much fuel. I have an extra CR tank if you are looking to purchse one. it's no beauty but its white and holds fuel without leaking.no cap ,emblems or petcock.
 
Thanks wrx. I could see in pics, that the CR tanks were definitely shorter above the emblem recess, and then I saw pic of a CR tank that looked for some reason more flat on the sides. I know my bike got a long backyard sentence at one point, as the fenders and seat show those affects clear enough. I was starting to wonder if my tank is actually distorted and buldged out. Not just a little, but maybe alot. Still not sure how much is correct for the XC/WR additional capacity tank. Guess I'd have to see an cherry original, or measure it's capacity. Think I may get a CR tank, if only for certain rides.
 
CR tank is way easier on the knees and hips in the tight stuff, but the larger capacity of the WR-XC tank is the hot set up for those long rides where ya don't have to worry about refilling as often.
