  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

oil drained(needed to be anyway), cover off, springs out, fibres/steels out.

bike is getting stuck in first gear so what am I looking for? shift drum or forks or ratchet something or other? does basket come out by removing large centre nut?

have a new phone so lost a few contact details from blokes id pick their brains bout this stuff. anyone throw me a bone!
 
Well check it all. If it won't shift past first you're in beyond clutch territory. As long as you have good clutch action then it's time to go into the tranny.
 
well it was intermittent changing out of first last ride. sometimes ok sometimes just a dead feeling on lever. clutch needs adjusting as was creeping in gear but otherwise clutch was good. hoping not tranny was thinking something clutch/drum/fork/selector related. gotta get a 27mm socket to get basket out before I can go any further:banghead:
 
Is the arm that forces itself on the selector tightend up properly, os the star shaped selector on the drum properyl?
Thats about all you can check without splitting the cases.

You may be able too get a torch and see if the selector forks are moving but i doubt that will show you enough to highlight a problem.

Re 27mm socket use an impact driver to undo these ive known two people shear a lug off their baskets trying to hold it still and wrench.
Or use a basket holder.
 
hmm splitting cases sounds shite although if its required guess do entire bottom end. yuck $$$. hoping its something easy. so pull the basket yeah? don't have an impact gun juicy so guess just try be careful:D. normal thread direction on that nut?
 
Tightening the set screw that comes loose on the shift drum does not require splitting the cases. I do believe you have to remove the clutch assembly to get to it. If you do a search there's photos on the cafe explaining the problem and the fix.
 
If it helps.. One thing I do before splitting the cases is pull the clutch pack out (leave basket and hub installed (the 27mm nut)) and then reinstall the shift lever and try going through all the gears WHILE spinning the main shaft and counter shaft (you're chain needs to be removed). This way you are checking only the shifting and each "shift" should make a notable drop into gear. If the shafts aren't turning it will be tougher to engage the gears. I'd guess you have something not right with the shifter mechanism itself or the detent as stated above.
 
3G service in this wide beautiful country of ours is, ummm, pretty $hithouse...whats the go mate, is the bike able to shift up into gears like clutchless shift or the clutch doesn't engage at all and l'm talking about when the bike is started?

If it's intermittent, you may have a crappy spring tension (i think around where the selector arm is) or the bolt has loosen up, if it won't shift up at all, the woodruff key behind the star selector may have given way but l doubt ... if you've gone this far then you've split the cases....pretty hard to f'up the shift forks.

Have you check your steels, you may have warped clutch plates?

I can't remember but can you pull the clutch rod out and then the clutch cable arm and check the spring tension and wear on that cable arm...again, l doubt it.

PS. 27mm nut, buy a cheap air compressor and an impact gun, you'll bust a hernia trying to get that nut off!!

got the compressor so may have to invest in impact gun. clutch itself is ok(other than creeping a bit in gear but unrelated issue I reckon) as it engages/disengages ok it seems shifter/tranny related. plates/fibres ok. last ride it got stuck in first several times as in it wouldn't shift up at all lever shifter just felt solid when trying to upshift like somethings jammed in there. turn bike off, rock back/forward in gear try again come good then same deal over again
 
ahh shit looks like inner cover needs to come off judging by past peoples experiences. oh well spose should order some new rad hoses while im doing this

Since you are going to have the clutch apart you can adjust the center nut and screw to get perfect geometry of the cable arm at the case. A small flat screwdriver fits in the slot to hold the center push-rod still, then you can loosen the lock-nut and adjust the push-rod length to get the arm to disengage the clutch as the arm is at 90 degrees to the cable. This will take out a bunch of the creep and make the clutch easier and smoother to pull. This simple adjustment made more of a difference on my bike than the Motion Pro cable everyone brags about.
 
Ok heres what i think before anyone guesses. The drum bearing had broken up and is causing miss alignment during some gear changes. Thats what i think.

You can see the star shifter and the tension one with the clutch still inplace just need the bigger cover off not split the cases... Yet the powervalve may be sticky thats happend to me the bearing welded itself to the end of the pv shaft.

Let us know what you find, should if memory serves correctly see part of the bearing behind the star once thats off, you may need a heat gun to break the loctight on the allen headed countersunk screw.
You will know it when you see it.
Oh and if the bikes on its side be bloody careful with screws and washers falling in the oil allowance gaps in the cases.
 
got a 27mm socket so will rustle up a mate to help me crack the clutch nut off over the weekend & see whats happeningin there. looking at it doesn't seem so bad if have to remove inner cover(looks straight forward) but obviously would prefer not to. got sidetracked today replacing 165 top end-shes good to go now!:thumbsup:
 
Oh ya, I forgot to mention when you are adjusting the clutch push-rod in the center of the basket you will have to back off the cable adjustment to give yourself free play while adjusting. You will be amazed how much this adjustment helps.

yup couple of heat cycles this arvo while drinkin a few cans & admiring my mechanical aptitude:o so shes ready to rip Monday! I will certainly look into adjusting clutch correctly just wanna sort the shift issue out first! didn't help that I spent the morning at the mx track watching the Aus junior titles-man some fast kids riding & they really hang it out too!:eek: reckon id have me ring hanging out trying to keep up with the 65s! :busted:
