  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Oil type and change suggestions

Just picked up an almost new 2012 TE 310. Had 36 miles on it when I got it, I put another 40, fairly easy miles on it when I got it home. So far so good. Ready to change the oil. Just wondering if Husky owners have suggestions for first oil change, type of oil, synthetic or not, filter recommendations, etc. Also, any recommended sources for filters, parts etc. I don't have a dealer very local to me so I will likely order anyway.

Thanks in advance, glad to be a part of the Husky family.

Holy crap Batman! Another oil thread ... We gotta nip this in the bud ...

I got a different model bike but I have to go with a true synthetic oil or at least 75-25 blend with the true synthetic oil as the former && the latter part as a part-synthetic oil and a SS oil filter ... Changes are every 300 miles or so, depending on how hard I ride the bike ...

BMP, Halls, and Taskys are the dealers I use very successfully for parts and bike purchases ..

No, no. I don't want any oil wars, I've been through those on other boards with trucks and such. More curious about whether or not to run a full synthetic on the first oil change or to go with a dino oil for a bit. Is the 10w50 the way to go as suggested in manual or do some of you run something else? I will find which brand meets the specs and figure out what I can find locally, I don't want to get in to the brand wars. Factory filters or something better? Are the intervals recommended by the manual pretty good from most experiences? I have just been out of the bike scene for a few years and would like to cut the learning curve down a bit.

Thanks,

Craig

A semi syn like motul 10 50 is more than adequate for the bike. A fully syn is potentially better but more expensive. My rationale is at 300 mile/500kms change overs the extra addatives in the more expensive oils are not in play.
I change my filter every second oil change.
If you have junked the cat. then consider putting in fully syn 2 stroke oil in the fuel at 100:1 ratio. It does not smoke or foul the plugs, cushions the valves (quasi lead replacement) and interestingly appears to keep the fuel in good nick for a longer time. Finally it helps keep the top compression ring lubed.
Put in an iridium plug for a cleaner burn and quicker start in the cold.
Cheers.

Oil wars..... No, don't trip. Those are good questions to ask when you've got a brand new bike and want to be sure to do things right.
That's what this forum is here for, asking questions and sharing info.
I've heard about the running "Dino oil" for the first oil change theory but I don't recall the explanation for it. Not discounting it as I'm sure there's
logical reasoning behind it, then there's a lot of people who go with full Synth for the first and never look back. I usually rely on my "go-to" Husky
dealer for any questions because I know he (or she) knows their shit when it comes to Husky's and I trust what they tell me. I don't know your location
but here in Norcal I rely on MotoXotica, who, btw, is another great resource for parts and will ship to you. In regards to the oil filters, you may want to
purchase one OEM just so you have some extra seals but stock up on the HiFlow's as they're a lot cheaper than the OEM. This is the case with my 511
which I just remembered you don't have but nevertheless is probably true with the 310's too. Enjoy your new ride.

For filters. The 2011-2013 TE 310 use the same filter as a honda CRF450x: K&N 116 hiflow 116 etc. So If you have honda dealer and/or any local motorcycle dealer they can get an oil filter that fits. I have used both the high flow and the K and N in addition to the factory
ones. I changed the oil to dino 10-40 befre I even started it. Then I changed it after the first 30 minutes and then then next hour, then two hours, then three hours and then four more hours before switching to Mobile one and changeing it every 5 hours. (new filter every other change)

That is good info, thanks. On another note, has anyone used the txc ecu/injector power up set up on the TE. I've seen talk of the aftermarket upgrades but the Husky stuff. Talked to a Husky dealer that recommended the txc stuff. Thanks again.

Oil. Make sure it has some. Don't let it run dry. Change often - we're only talking about a litre here, so why not? Syn? I'll let others explain why. Dino? I'll let others explain why not. Enjoy your new bike!
