  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

oil level screw?

HOLY CRIKEY BARRELS OF CRAZINESS****************************************!! I just put in the recommended 1703ml or roughly 1.8 quarts of oil (oil and filter change). That is a huge difference coming out the oil check bolt. The manual reads it should barely escape, but with 1703ml that stuff is streaming out.

Should I really be using that much oil or is the manual wrong on this as well or by some odd chance do I have an Import????????? The Imp should be 1.5quarts.

If I remember correctly, my 05 called for 1.5 quarts and my 09 calls for 1.8, your 06 would use less than 1.8 I believe, maybe. The 06 is almost identical to the 05, when they changed the recommended amount of oil I don't think they changed the weep hole location...

You got me.
It really is a big difference from using the 1.8 with using the check bolt. Because 1.8 streams out. Not even close to "barely escaping." Shoot, I probably let out 200ml and it was still streaming. :excuseme:
I NOW HAVE NO IDEA WHAT MY MOTOR SHOULD HAVE FOR OIL QUANTITY, EITHER FOR OIL AND FILTER EXCHANGE OR JUST OIL EXCHANGE.

I looked at the a pdf version for the 2006 models and I have a physical manual for 2007, both read 1.8 for oil and filter.

So when you put in 1.5q in your '05 (assuming that is after an oil and filter change and not just an oil change) does it barely escape the check bolt or does it stream out?

Ah-ha, had no idea what that meant. C'mon, you gotta give me a fraction of a point for thinking "Import." :naughty:
Which now that I think of it, "import" makes zero sense. Gotta love the lack of sleep playing with the mind. Babies, I call mine the Sleep Reaper.

Thanks Pepper, you're on the '06 510 right?

I guess I'm just gonna have to go with something between 1.6q and 1.8q. Although using that check bolt I've had lower than that. I'll have to measure the oil to see what the level is at the "barely escaping" point. It's gotta be under 1.5q

The one time I used the weep hole it seemed to dribble out, not stream. I only took it out once, back then people were stripping the threads, I was always paranoid of that. I still have the bike and the bolt in the weep hole hasn't been removed in many years.

So I just got word from a shop that many of us know and they are going with 1500ml.
Got a local shop telling me 1650ml.

This is 100% correct, my 2006 TE250 (and 2006 TE450/510) uses 1.8 Quarts when changing oil & filter. (aside, why would anyone change the oil, and not change the filter?)

I have a dedicated container with a mark on the side of it using a 'sharpie' marker, with 1.8 Quarts.

At least with my 2006 TE250:
  • If the oil is too high, it will blow out the air box and look like a 2st for a little while
  • If the oil is too low, it will be harder to shift
  • The bike has a lot of oil compared to other bikes, so personally am not too concerned with it

Coffee, I read you about the air box spit out issue. Funny thing is I have had oil in there a lot less than 1703ml (1.8q) and it spat out oil. Of course it took a little while to see it on the swing arm, because the air box has a sort of bowl at the bottom. I could just imagine how much spit out there is with the full manual recommended amount of 1.8q.

I think there is about 1400 to 1500ml in there now (my new fill amount). I did have 1703ml, but I lost some due to not expecting oil to shoot out of the check bolt like it did. Will have to wait until next full oil change for exact oil quantity.

I guess a partial good thing is, if you put too much in at least it can spit it out, allowing for self-correction. HA!!! I think I just got what someone else posted that the bike, "self-levels." So true.
