• Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Oil leaking at the near the telltail

has anyone had this issue?
I noticed it at 500kms so told the store, and now waiting for seals on the warranty with no explaination why it would be leaking. also the oil had always been high on the dipstick.
the other day I had the first 1000km service,the guy doing the change said he put 3 litters in the bike, as that was what came out, I questioned the that as the manuals state 2.01 Litres, all the guys at the store assured me that 3.0 Litres was right even making out one guy was looking at the online manual while behind the counter.
am I missing something here or is this a cockup on the stores half

I don't know about 3l. After the oil and filter change I added between 2-2.4l and it came up to almost full on the dipstick. That's of course after following the manual's procedure. If you haven't all ready download the shop manual from the manual section. Have you check the oil level yourself? where is it on the dipstick?

Well when page 41 of the shop manual says add 1.5 litres of oil to the tank, run for 30 seconds then add .5 litres. It looks like your shop didn't read the manual.
When I changed mine it was spot on. Mind you I did get 2.1 litres out when I drained it.
Get the bike hot as per manual and check it yourself. They guy at the counter might have said 3.1 litres but the tech put in 2.1. That's what I think.

Getting 2.1 liters out may be attributed to the fact you heat the engine before changing it and you put cool oil in so you only need 2 liters?

Check oil and its way over full.
When I called the tech he seemed to think it wasn’t a big deal, he was also saying it was what the manual said (3.01 l). Until today when I copied and pasted the oil change part of the manual in an email.
On the phone he said he’s happy to drain the oil for me but I’m sure it’s done damage as there’s oil leaking. They have some water pump seals coming. (Under warranty but this was before I found out about the 3 l of oil drama.
He told me over filling isn’t a danger to the engine yet I have a feeling I can’t trust a word they say now.
Does anyone know if it can do damage I have done 1200 kms now with 3 litres of oil the whole time by the sounds.
Also what sort of rights I have as a customer in this situation in the au
 
24 month warranty, if they broke it, they fix it. Give my dealer a call and have a chat.

Maybe a heads up to all the Southern Tassie members here, Tel, and Spicy Guacamole to check their oil levels
 
What is a "taltail"?

For what it is worth, when I changed my oil I did put in almost 2.4 Quarts and that seemed correct, then after some research, did the proper oil check, and it was overfilled. As far as I am concerned the manual is correct. It is real easy to put too much oil in the 650's because the oil level seems to change significantly when the bike is warmed up as instructed to check the oil level.
 
Hey terra squad, where was the workshop who put in the 3 litres?

It can potentially do damage, and my understanding is that under Australian Consumer Law they will certainly be liable!

If it was me I would be documenting everything, including names, dates, times and even photos.

Telltail? thats what they said at the store. and a so called waterpump seal leaking. yet it was oil leaking?

Called the Husky guys at head office and they informed me that Motorworks Tasmania had admited to them that they had stuffed up and been following the bmw manual,
10 tr650 services these guys have done.
16 tr60 bikes sold

this site has linked up 2 others so far that have checked there oil as per manual and found it over full after having there bikes serviced at Motorworks Tasmania

Im wondering what else was missed now. Might be worth getting a second set of eyes to run over it and make sure its ok.

I found a thin film of oil under my crankcase, looks like it could have come from the water pump area. Have to take it into the dealer to take a look. My oil level was never overfilled.
 
Maybe a qualified mech can chime in here. But to much oil in the frame reservoir would just be messes and maybe leak out from expansion. But I don't think it can do any damage to the engine.:excuseme:
 
I found oil and other things in strange places. Rather than assume something was wrong I washed it with soapy water, so far there is nothing indicating a leak.

Just suggesting start with the simple things.

Did the same thing, washed the underside of the bike. now just waiting for the rain to stop so i can go for a ride...
 
Hhhhmmmm - as I said, document everything, particularly the admission if you can get it in writing!

I think getting a qualified and compotent mech with no affiliation to motorworks to put a fine tooth comb over her will be important. Your problem is that if their is any issues than you need to flush them out now. Finding out in 6 months will be too hard to prove and too late.

Tough break mate - hope you get it sorted!

A "telltail" is a visual aid to check if the waterpump seal is in good order. If a fair amount of oil (to lubricate the mechanical drive side of the pump) or coolant (what the pump pumps obviously) comes out of the hole it means the seal to keep the oil out of the coolant or the coolant out of the oil (this is bad if they mix either side of the seal) is failing. Its good idea to check from time to time and to keep it unblocked from dirt etc.

Excuse me guys am I missing something I thought the TR 650 was dry sump unless you fill the engine with oil and not the frame how can you over fill the oil in the engine..... You can only over fill the frame or am I wrong?
