  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Oil leak

I changed the oil on my '12 TE310 and now the bottom of the oil filter cover is moist. Has there ever been an issue with the oil cover seal being bad or the filter cover not being square so a tiny leak happens? Should I use a touch of silicon on the botton between the filter cover and the case?

Just an o-ring there. Could be it got pinched? Maybe coat the o-ring with a small amount of rtv sealant. I think Zip Ty makes a paper gasket for the oil filter cover to replace that o-ring.

My 010 TC250s do the same thing ... I just added some of that silicone gasket maker to seal it off ... Maybe those o-rings are wrong or something but I'll use the gasket maker till I can go match up an oRing at some parts store here ... You could probably make a gasket without too much trouble ..

I change the o-ring every other time. The paper gasket works great also. It is a pain and it ticks me off everytime, but I guess it is what it is...

I encountered this as well on my 250.. I don't know maybe it's the o-ring - I opened up oil filter and put it back on - third time and it didn't leak. On the third time, I just made sure it was aligned perfectly and held it there really tight when screwing the oil filter case back on... I think it can be mis-aligned in the slightest even if you screw it back on tight and will leak, my experiences at least

Perhaps you could lube the o-ring with a little fork oil before reinstalling. Fork oil has seal conditioners in it that will cause the o-ring to swell.

In February 2016 I luckily stumbled on a pristine 2013 TC 250. I love it, but after the first oil/oil-filter change I could not stop oil from leaking out of the oil filter cover using the OEM O-rings.

Zip Ty Racing sells a paper gasket that replaces the stock O-ring and stops leakage from the oil-filter cover. The gasket can be purchased by phone order only, and the phone number is (760)947-4744. The Zip Ty Racing part number is GKT-H; again, it solved the oil-filter cover leak problem on my TC 250. I think the gasket is made by Cometic.

I somehow found these sources of gaskets by looking around on Cafe Husky, so I am returning the favor.

I've found that over time the o ring becomes flat and doesn't seal as its supposed to . This is especially more likely to happen if the bike runs hot and your not using a Viton o ring which seems to be more tolerant of heat than the stock one . I have several and just change them at the first sign of weeping or dust stuck around the filter cover . If you over heat the bike as in blow a coolant line off or the like then you will be replacing more than the oil filter o ring, you will notice several areas on the bike that will seem to weep .
