    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

I just hit the 10 hour mark on my bike and did its third oil change tonight. The oil was pitch black like it was out of a diesel truck. Does anyone know what could cause that? Is it the recirculated crank case vent? Im I'm considering rerouting it because I don't want it to gum up my throttle body. If anyone has any insight it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
 
I never seen this on a 501! My oil always comes out clean after 5 ish hour oil change. The first few changes it was a bit dirtier but nothing like you describe.
Is it a 501S with all the smog gear on it?
There are only two reasons for the oil to be that dirty, either too much fuel is pumped in and doesn't burn properly or the clutch is wearing.
Since it's a new bike I think it's a fuel issue. Anything sticking on the magnet?
 
Mine comes out dark but nothing jaw dropping. I think it's from the aluminum clutch pressure plates. If it bothers you, replace them with steel. I hate to ask buuut, what oil are you using?
 
Mine has had 11 oil changes at 90 hours. First change was within the first hour. The second was within the next 3 or 4 hours. 3rd at 10hours. Logged every one in a book at about 10 hours since.

I changed to Mobil 1 0w-40 Full Synthetic on the first oil change and a PC155 S/S filter. I have used about an ounce of "Maxilube" on each change but ran out the last change and tossed the empty bottle.

The last oil change, before last weekend I had let the oil go to about 13 hours. I had one tiny, tiny little copper colored speck on the longer side mounted transmissions screen? Not much to wipe off on the drain plug magnet. I always smear it on a white paper towel to see what's in it? Never anything reflecting back or any slivers.

My oil has come out clean every time. Never has been discolored to the point that it isn't still light brown in color. I couldn't tell you why your oil is coming out black.

I run the heavy duty "Slavens Racing" 280lb. pressure Belleville spring in the clutch and am hard on the clutch quite a bit of the time to keep momentum up in the rocky climbs here. That hasn't resulted in any discoloration to my oil that would be attributed to abuse of the clutch and I am running the stock clutch plates.

The only thing I can attribute it to is the recirculated Crank case vent... the oil was clean with no specs in it and the magnet and filter were both what you could expect out of a new bike, almost spotless.

Try the blue bottle full synthetic Rotella 5w40 instead of the 15w40. It is superior because it's not a blend and still JASO rated for the wet clutch. My bet is your dark oil is due to clutch dust/heat/wear and general use and abuse.
 
If your going to use Rotella use the regular T..... Its probably clutch plates.... wonder it your little adjust on clutch lever too tight causing it to be slightly engaged
 
I've been using Rotella T6 in my 500exc since the 1hr oil change without issue. Always changed at 15hrs and always comes out clean (for used oil).
Got about 140hrs on it now and still purrs like new
 
PC, does the 500exc have a recirculated crank case vent? I think thats the culprit but I honestly don't know. Surely I'd have other issues as well if my rings didn't seat properly?

They all do, can't think of anything that doesn't has that except for some racing engines where they rout it to the outside and in most places that's against the rules now too.
Easy to check. Pull off the tank and undo the hose from the head cover. Put some loose hose on it and put the tank back on (no need to fit it properly) and start it. If it smokes like an old choochoo there is a problem!
Once the rings are bedded in these engines don't puff much out of there at all.
It's always possible there is an issue so the faster you get on to it the more likely you can get a warranty.
KTM's quality control is not exactly fool proof, I found a disintegrated sticker in the tank of the 501, probably of the pump or a hose.
Pretty sure they have to remove that before fitting. Luckily I saw it floating around in bits and cleaned the tank before it blocked anything.
