• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Oil consumption

WickedWill

Husqvarna
AA Class
Noticed my 630 using a bit of oil when ridden hard.Used about 150ml in 300km.Has done this before on a 200km single track fire road loop.Shows up dripping from airbox lightly. So i am quessing blowby?
When ridden in a more sedate manner i don't notice any consumption.
Any ideas?

Do many wheelies?

The crankcase vent comes from the rear of the valve cover, so any time on the back wheel can end up putting oil into the airbox.

Also, any bit of overfill will end up there in short order. Do you check your oil level with the bike on the side stand or upright?

A little blowby is normal, but with a big thumper, the crankcase pressure is a roller coaster anyway due to the large single piston displacing air in the case. If you're higher in the RPM, more oil is pumped to the head, and more is likely to end up escaping through the vent.

RDTC is correct but WickedWill's oil use is too much for only that. 150ml in only 300km. That is only 188 miles for almost 10% of the oil capacity to blow by. That shouldnt be under any circumstance.

I flog my bike pretty good at times. I ride deep sand, mud, single track as well as cruise pavement often for longish distances at high speeds, 75-85mph (120-135kph). That is commonly a cause of excess blowby as well. I haven't ever added oil between my 1,500 -2,000 mile oil changes. Always well within sight glass range and never below mid point between hash marks. I believe mid level on sight glass to upper level is 200ml or less. My bike is currently at almost 17,000 miles so should be a little looser on the top end than his as well.

True, unless he's been checking oil level on the sidestand and it's been overfilled, and I hope he knows better than that :p

No wheelies.did a few steep climbs.Oil checked with bike straight up.I use ipone 10/60.Been in for 1000km
A mate who was on the ride said his dr was low after. Is there a better breather system available?I have had high crankcase pressure in a motor i bored and stroked and had to run a catch system or it would blow almost dry.

My SM630 has 16000kms (10000mi) and it doesn't consume ANY oil. I change it every 2500kms (~1500miles?) and everytime I change the oil it seems there is more oil than I put in. If it consumes so much, get it serviced. Well, at least I would... :)

The oil comes out in great condition. I don't ride very aggressively though, mostly commuting. The oil sightglass measures quite badly IMO, my mech always overfills the engine.. My advice is to measure the oil level under consistent conditions - take a ride, wait 5 minutes and take a look. Otherwise the level varies a lot.

On a 630 you need to hold the bike straight up for 2 minutes before the oil reaches it's true level in the sightglass. That's why they get overfilled.

.

how many km with the oil? some say 1.000km....some change it at 2500km (Motul 7100 10w60)
I ride mostly with the enduro wheel set...offroad i mean...

On my SMS, I'll go ~1800-2000 miles with Castrol RS 4t, now that the motor is properly broken in at ~13k miles.
I was in the motor last summer for a bent shift fork and everything (that wasn't related to the fork) looked brand new. The crosshatching in the cylinder from the factory hone was still clean and bright, even the rings still looked almost new.

I change the oil regularly. If ridden hard offroad it gets dumped. The last 2 changes have been 1000km and 1500km.Casual commuting it gets dropped at 2500/3000km. It has been in the last few thousand that i have noticed the oil dropping when ridden offraod.Up to 14000km mark it didn't use oil.First i tried a different brand ,same results. Both were full synthetic oils. There is no residue on the pipes.I have cleaned the airbox and there doesn't look like any,if a little, has been getting in there. It has been losing oil off the air filter which started after the ride i noticed the oil consumption. I will try and rack up another thousand with out any offroad[hard] and see if it drops.
I don't really want to leakdown test it yet.

1,8 liter oil+ filter?
Yes
Filter every second change
These are the 2 brands oil i have experienced this with

In all fairness prior to the start of the burning issues the penrite did 4000km mix of hway and dirt and didn't burn a drop.I was hoping that it may have been a full synthetic issue but i don't think it is.I have marked the sight glass and will run the ipone for another 500km and see if it drops.Other than oil use the te is running great, definitely not down on power.
