• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Oil Change & Other Questions

I did an oil/filter change last week and thought I'd try Rotella T6 5w-40. So far I'm happy with it, bike shifts smoothly and it runs quieter than normal. I've read the "Bobstheoilguy" articles and the more I read the more confused I get...

So here's the question I know you all are gonna hate, but is there really much difference in protection between a full synth 5w-40 or the recommended 10w-60? Is there anyone that's been running this oil grade for an extended period on this particular bike?

I tried the Rotella T6 5w40 on my last oil change. Then I bought a case of the good Castrol race 4T 10w50.

I've used Mobil 1 as well.

The 5w40 Rotella made more valvetrain noise than any of the other's I have tried, even after a valve check. I haven't run it for longer than ~1500 miles, but I don't think I'll be using it in the bike again.

I'm surprised about the mileage of the 1st oil change. I've done mine at 70-100 miles. Not saying it's super critical but better to know sooner if you have excess metal circulating around in there and figure out why.

Mild weather areas like So. Calif 20/50 is a good choice that's easy to find. Some filters bypass (with too much throttle) on cold start with a pressure valve so best to warm up for 3 min or so.

+1 on Amsoil! My 610 shifts a lot better and the usual "change the oil when shifting gets harder" isn't as noticeable. When I change the oil it always looks and feels like I changed it too early!

Does anyone happen to have the sizes of the crush washers for the oil drain plugs for the 630? I want to order a few and don't have any to throw the calipers to unfortunately.

You are putting almost 2 liters too much in the oil pan... It takes almost a full minute for the sight glass to become useful and that is with hot oil. All the other bikes I've had positioned the sight glass right in the crankcase reservoir - this one must have tiny little passages for the oil to get to the glass. Freaked me out the first time I checked and thought the dealer forgot to add oil to my bike. Use the method jtemple does above and it works great.

Very true, I came unstuck with the same thing and people didn't believe me on here, not naming any names but they know who they are and they even called my abilities in to question. Can you believe the cheek of it!?

The sight glass is not the best.

Read this and become informed...it will help protect you from sketchy internet advice:

Both types of oil lubricate just fine. Synth lubricates a cold engine better...that's the main benefit. It also has the potential to last a little longer, but our bikes spec a short oil change interval anyway.

If you use synthetic, it MUST have the JASO-MA certification for wet clutch use. Do NOT use synth oils that have the "Energy Conserving" logo on the API circle. Your clutch will slip.

BTW -- I switched to Rotella 5W-40 after I read that primer and talked with my uncle, who is a retired engine design engineer who specialized in lubrication. If some engine rebuild guys measured something different...then they weren't controlling the test parameters properly. While the Rotella is marketed as a heavy-truck diesel oil, it has the JASO-MA certification, which means that Shell took the trouble to get it certified and they know something about this stuff. My uncle did research and wrote papers about engine design and oil for 40 years (mostly at Cummins). He said...don't screw around. Just buy the synthetic.

So it is just synthetic oil that needs to be certified for motorbike use then?

Is there a reason you're resurrecting every old thread you can find on here, SMJ and other places, flynn? And nobody really questioned your abilities, only your capabilities given your situation...

I just like resurrecting old threads because I wonder if the OPs will find them afterwards. Anyway I did have a legitimate question as to the synthetic oils being the only oils that can affect the clutch or not. Why make a new thread when you can use an old, perfectly good thread?:)

I write my experience here . I use for my motorcycle and car older and current oil Mobil 1 5W50 since 1988. 85,000 km with Aprilia Tuareg 350 wind 185,000 km with Pegaso 650 GA I had 0 problems with the clutch even if Mobil1 5W50 is a 100 % synthetic oil for cars Change always perfect My TE uses currently Mobil1 5W50 peak life I do not recommend different gradations

My judgement and tact? It's a question about oil grades FFS, how could it be untactful? It's not as if I have resurrected a thread asking if somebody died in the end is it!?

He was referring to the same thread that you tried to dredge up...

Yes, THIS thread IS about oil. Let's keep it that way.
