  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

oil change intervals and oil viscosity

My 09 txc250 is due for an oil change, well I think anyway.

When I first got the bike I bought full synthetic 10w50 as the manual says 10w60. (which I couldnt find at the time)
I've now just searched here for intervals and oils and it seems I might be running too thicker oil. ( lot of people seem to be running 0w40 or 10w40)

Does oil and filter every 5 hours seem right?
Is full synthetic 10w50 too thick or about right?

I put over 20,000 miles on a 2010 TE450. I changed the oil every 1000 miles, over 20 times. I only used Mobil1 15w50, its hot here in Central TX. One time,at 7,000 miles, I ran the radiator dry and rode home 50 miles at hiway speed with only oil cooling. It burnt the water pump seal, damaged the head gasket, damaged the intake manifold, etc. The 15w50 saved the expensive parts, I went on for another 15,000 miles. I have a Suz DR650 now, I only run Mobil1 15w50 in both my bikes.

Just get a good quality bike specific fully synthetic oil. I use 10/40 most times.
I change my oil after every 3 rides and the oil filter every second oil change.

Are you using reg mobile or motorcycle specific ?
 
I have a 07 TE450. I was told by the dealer when I got it brand new, to use only petroleum based motor oil in it, because the full synthetic would make the clutch slip....so I did. Specs called for a 10/60 synthetic. I used a few different kinds and weights of oil in my engine....20/50, 15/40, some automotive, but approved for turbo use, some motorcycle specific. I changed the oil every 500 miles and the filter, every 1000 miles. I have over 800 hours and 12000 miles on my bike. Nothing significant has happened to the engine yet, and it still starts and runs well.

How does the clutch feel with regular auto oil ?

If I were in you I would use Mobil 1 5W50 with stainless steel oil filter to be right in the middle of 10W60 and 0W40 :busted:
I'm using M1 0W40 in my 310 and also as two stroke tranny oil...for me its perfect (in two stroke tranny better (by feel) than P1 5W40 and transoil 10W40)
 
Run Motul 10 60 and your clutch and shifts will be much better as i have used it in all mine currently have 2010 te450 and te310 which is for sale with 350 actual miles
 
Been using 15W40 diesel oil in all my motorcycles for a few decades. The Husky has over 10,000 miles on it and still has almost zero leak down last time I tested it.

I always suggest using what the manual says to use if you are the type of person who will worry about it. Oil choices are almost on par with Rel & Pol, everyone has an opinion and theirs is the right one!
 
2008 TE250. Oil change every 750 miles. Motul 10w60 or 10w50. Motul is getting hard to find and expensive but Maxima has a 10w50 that I will probably move too soon.
