  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Ohlins anyone??

Has anyone mounted an Ohlins shock on the TE/449/511 platform? I see they are available and not too spendy, just an arm, no leg needed. I'm going on my 3rd lower shock bearing (12' TE511) with only 2300 miles on the clock. I'm greasing it every 5th or so ride. I ride hard, but not that hard. Anyone else notice they're wearing out awful fast?

I think one one of the Supermoto guys did it (Caimen if I remember right). Other then that the only guy I've heard of is on a WR300. I'd give Zip-Ty a call or ask Tinken because I really haven't read anything about this yet. I spend more time here then I care to admit :)

What kind of grease are you using? I use Mobil1 Synthetic red grease mixed with an ep additive such as Maxilube.

Not all Ohlins are rolls royce quality. They too build to a price. This would not make a difference in the bearing wear IMHO. Maybe get a different bearing manufacturer. I am curious as your shock/linkage mounts on top of the swing are and should be less prone to the elements than the under mounted shocks. For intanse all my bearings in the rear and all wheel bearings are still good after 3500 kms due to regular re-greasing using a quality waterproof marine grease. Maybe find a sealed bearing, prize the cover off and repack with new grease and see what happens.

Running an Ohlins TTX44 rear shock on my SMR511 and can't fault it. It's for a TC and has been shortened and revalved for supermoto use.

Ive been using Maxima waterproof bearing grease. I might switch to some Silkolene sythetic stuff I have. Although, If you guys are having good luck with the Mobil 1, then maybe that's my ticket.

I figured (hoping) Ohlins was using a different type of lower bearing?? The needle cage doesn't seem to wear as fast as the solid steel spacer inside that it rides on does.

Use aqua shield waterproof grease. I would be very impressed if it ever required re greasing. It is the maple syrup of grease and water has 0 chance of displacing it only friction/squish can remove it.

Amsoil makes a crazy thick grease that is almost like wax and is hard to displace. Good stuff for bearings like that that have little movement.

As for the shock send it to ZipTy for a redo. I had mine done and it is AMAZING. One of the best rear suspensions I have ever ridden. Buddy with a nicely setup KTM 350 rode my 511 the other day, got off it about a mile in and said "If I ride this bike any further I'm going to hate my bike" because the suspension was so good and the motor rocks.

M1 red grease has a low wash out, but the maxilube contains the extreme pressure lubricant which attaches to the metal and stays long after the grease is gone.

Thanks for the input- I was thinking I would just give my KYB another go.. until I saw this bike, now my needs turned to wants and I want forks too

Ohlins makes great forks. I think the Marzocchi Shivers are better. We setup full Ohlins systems, but actually race with 48mm shivers.

Are the Shivers gold colored though?? Cus you know it's all about the bling! I'm gonna try the Mobil 1 grease and giver her another go.
