    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

off-road gas mileage on '82 430XC?

Anyone know what mileage they're getting running off-road, at a moderate, not full race pace? Trying to figure out what my range will be with a 3.8 gal tank. Have only gotten one ride in since purchase/rebuild, and had a slipping/failed clutch on that ride so I don't have any realistic experience. Used to race an '81 430CR. In a 2 hour harescrambles in the open expert class, would barely make it to the 1 hour point to refill. That's a 2.9 gal tank, probably averaging 28mph (fast/open course), so approximately 21.5 mpg. Am guessing the XC will average maybe 35mpg?
 
I think a lot of the mpg will depend on what carb you are running. Back in the 1980's I was racing a 1985 KTM 500 in Baja and with a properly jetted 38mm Bing carb it barely got 9 mpg!! Seriously, our 460 big block Ford chase truck got better mpg than our race bike did. After growing tired of having to carry extra fuel just to make a 50 mile pit we swapped the Bing carb for a 38mm Kei-Hin and our mileage shot up to 15 mpg with comparable performance to the Bing.
 
My 84 Maico 490 made one 50 mile Lap in the Desert 100 with a 4 gal Tank and I had less than an inch of Gas left. Its got a Mikuni. Probably 22 MPH average. If a Carb is jetted right it should get the same gas mileage no matter what brand. That being said Lectron sells a lot of Carbs for new KTM 2 strokes cause people would rather change the carb than go to a larger Gas tank.

wow...why on earth did ktm have freaking bings in the 80s? yikes.

different carbs atomize fuel fuel differently...flatslide, round, different brands. proper jetting of course is key. as many others have posted here, a lectron will provide fuel saving on top of other benefits. made a noticeable diff on my 360 on top of a nicely jetted mikuni
 
Mileage depends on how many rpm's your running at plus you have a 430cc with tractor like torque. This power allows you to use the upper ratios/gears in the tranny. If you burp it more and up and down shift rather than stay on it we should save gas. Unless your desert racing.

The stock tank on the 81 430CR was 2.7 gal. I dont think you will get a lot more than what you got with the '81, maybe 25mpg, definitely not 35mpg.
 
Installing the UFO in the bottom of the round slide carb does allow leaner jetting. It riches the gas because of better flow.
 
I own a 1981 Husky CR 430 with a Mukuni carb with a 460 main jet, 45 pilot, 6DH3 needle in #3 position at and average elevation of 2,000 ft. I am "A" Dist 36 rider that rides single track, enduro's, and hare scrambles an I get 15 mpg average what ever I ride. You should get a little better mileage with the xc depending on jetting but I would not suspect any more than 18 mpg.

If you can use 2.9 gallons in one hour at 28mph average, you have travelled 28 miles on 2.9 gallons, doesn't that mean you were getting somewhere around 9 mpg?
 
Is your milage calculated correctly because of the front wheel air time? (Speedo on the front wheel?)

I thought we did 100miles off road on my quad but found out it was only 50 miles because my quad was air born half the time.

How often is the front wheel in the air?
 
I got 85 miles before it ran completely out on a 1981 wr430 with 2.7 Us gallon mx tank. This was combination about 50 - 60 mph pavement and about 30 mph gravel road.This was trying to conserve gas so I think this would be the most you are likely to see.
So 31 miles per us gallon, or 37 miles per imperial gallon.

Sorry for the slow response, yes, your math would be correct. That seems like an incredible rate of fuel consumption, but when I think about it, other mx bikes I have raced at a pro level ('76 RM250, 2.1 gal tank capacity) were using probably 1.8 gal or more in a 40 minute plus 2 laps moto. That would equate to burning 2.4 gal/hr. Since this was a 250, I can see an open class burning 2.9 gal/hr.

Ha! That's funny, I wish I had my front wheel in the air often and long enough to make the odo not be accurate. I learned a long while ago that almost all the time I got hurt was when I was showing off, which usually involved wheelying for others. I don't do that any more.

Thanks Can, that's helpful and similar to what I was getting. Without an odo and not knowing exactly how many miles we traveled on these trails, I was unable to get a good feel.

Thanks Kartwheel, I thought I saw it was 2.9, but stand corrected. I think the 25 mpg number is about right, maybe up to 30 if not hammering it. I've got a Clarke 3.8 gal tank ready to install so that should net a range of 95 - 133, with a good tailwind, downhill!
