  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Non DOT Tires

Anyone run non DOT tires. I got the hook up on MX51's for the ral cheap. I know technally they are illeagal on the street, but has anyone ran them or any other non DOT tires and got shit from the po-po or others for it?

That all I've ever used on my 610 and 511. With the exception of the Karoo's that come stock on the 511 and the Pirelli XCMH, which is
a fairly aggressive DOT tire, I just go with dirt tires. I do very little street riding but I've never been stopped nor have I ever heard of anyone
being stopped for non-DOT tires but that's not to say it couldn't happen to you. What state do you live in ?

The only pattern I've noticed is that in areas of so cal that are 'problematic' (people mis-behaving), that some law enforcement officials will check. If they are non-dot then the person is told to not ride the roads. At least that is what I recall over the last few years.

I personally do not worry about it.

I've ridden with guys who swear by the MX51's. Never tried them myself but they seem to get great reviews. Is this hookup
exclusive or shareable ?

MX51s are great offroad tires but don't wear very long and evapotate on pavement. It is reported that the CA state park rangers will give trouble if non DOT on legal vehicle only trails. The organisers of some dual sport rides will insist on DOT for this reason. Personally, I think the on road handling is so far superior with the DOTs that I only use them now for safety reasons. Right now I am on Motoz Tractionator I/T.

The handful of non DOT tyres I have used have been great on the dirt but do the same as what shilo said. Wear out quickly particularly on the road. I have a feeling they dont balance as well and you get some wabbles at high speed.

Down here in So Cal, people ride a mix of tires, but sometimes the rangers in Anza Borrego Desert state park like to write tickets for non DOT equipment out on their "street legal vehicles only" roads and trails.

I suppose that anybody stopped for some other infraction on the pavement would be written for anything the officer might find during a traffic stop.

It's my new standard post "Don't (variable text here). I don't care. Won't bother me at all."

Mike, step away from the keyboard, take a deep breath. Summer is on the way. Then you will be riding long hours while we are in the dark. ;)

AZ here. Never a popo problem running non-dot. Might suggest the MX71 for a harder compound that holds up a bit better here in the desert and on the pavement.

Many if not most quality off road tires could be DOT approved if the manufacturer spent the money for the testing.

The Pirelli front knobbies are DOT and they're "real" dirt tires. Out back it's a Pirelli MT43 trials, again DOT. Keeps the popo away and you still get full dirt performance. The trials is very good on the street.

I run MX71's, even on the street, they are pretty tough. California rangers will right you for everything they can make money on, BLM too. When they wave you down, friendly wave back and ride away fast. :)
