  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

    Thanks for your patience and support!

My turn :thumbsup: I've been wanting to do this for awhile and it's finally coming together.
Yesterday I picked up this 2013 WR144 for $2500 off craigslist:
wr150-1.jpg
It's actually quite a bit rougher than in the pic :rolleyes: mechanically sound except for chain and sprockets and that damn Mik. I got it from the original owner, 88 hrs total with @ 40 on the top end and 30 on the clutch, new 125 kit still in the box, springs from a 310, 19" rear wheel from a CR250 and a few extra bits including a beat Husky/PC "works" pipe and PC silencer. Also got a spare set of tires and they're D756s with @ 80-90% tread, not dry or hard, seem to be good enough for now. It starts right up and pulls strong when it cleans out.
I've got a long list of parts already:
WB165 kit...check! picked up a used kit w/pipe already :banana:
Lectron! not even going to bother arguing with the Mik, it puked fuel in my truck all night, may need a petcock too;
fr fender and swingarm mud flap and eventually tank shrouds;
kickstand and all the hardware;
seat! (I knew beforehand the seat had gotten ripped and thinking to just get a spare);
TCII spark arrestor;
chain and sprockets;
all the high wear stuff of course, like grips, brake pads, tubes, clutch cable, etc

Anyone reading this who has some parts available, please PM me.
If I can get the Mik to stop puking I'm going to ride it around my place a little before tearing in down.

more later :cheers:

Had a fun 30 min in the woods and single track at my place this afternoon. I like the 144 enough, and it seems fresh and ready, that decided to wear it out before doing the 165 kit. It crawls in 1st and 2nd just fine and when I twist it's tail there's plenty of meat there too. I like it, really fun and easy to ride, just enough ass to work in the woods and scream through open sections, noticeably smaller, lighter feel, good fit standing, but pretty cramped sitting.

Stock tires, chain and sprockets are toast, already threw the Mikuni in the ditch, no braces on the rad's but they're fine.

Forks are almost flush in the clamps, is that typical? If not, can someone suggest a starting point please?
It actually handles pretty well at slow speeds, but pretty sketchy sometimes, especially braking at higher speeds. Planning to do the forks with 5wt, line it all up, fr tire and brake pads to start.
The rear is setup for someone heavier than me, but planning to just back off the preload and clickers for now, check the sag and go from there.
Linkage and wheel bearing seem fine, steering too, but there's a nasty slime at the bottom that makes me suspicious.
No cracks or breaks found yet, looks like the caliper dents the silencer when it bottoms, so have to check that out.
If it keeps going like this I think I'm going to be very happy :cheers:

:thumbsup:
grease up the linkage bearings they sieze pretty quickly
I stiffened up the front springs on mine but they still bottom out

I might be interested in the stock silencer and mikuni if selling cheap

Thanks, same same with the 300, especially the lower shock bearing. PO said he greased it regularly...we'll see.
Stock silencer is not a spark arrestor, so thinking it's not the original ?? It is a Husky part, #H2117
If you weren't in Oz or if I was, you could have the Mik! I guess that's foolish though, 'cause I see them for sale here and ebay for $75-100
PM me an offer if you want to. :cheers:

I used this in my forks.

Made a huge difference over the 5W that was in there

That looks like good oil, what difference did it make? I've got 5wt Maxima in the 300 and was a big improvement, planning to do the same to the 144 so far.

It took all the harshness out of the forks. It was the strangest feeling, riding sections of the track I've ridden hundreds of times and not feeling half the stuff I was expecting.

Since it's raining so much here this week and considering this one is in desperate need of tlc I'm going a little further than I had planned this time around.
Some undisclosed damage I'm not how to treat:

Looks like the chain came off and chewed the case. No leaks, but I sure don't like it. At first I thought just to clean it well and RTV it, but now thinking I could tape off the seal and JB it instead.
Suggestions welcome.
Also looks like I may be the first to remove the frame guards :rolleyes: Here's to hoping the swingarm bolt is ok :cheers:

All ok for now, swingarm bearings are the worst, but will do.
wr150-4.jpg
Titanium Yamahammer spring barely fits, also 265mm long instead of 260mm like the stocker.

Making slow, but good progress. Too bad I still have to work to finance my habits, I need a sugar momma! ;)
Have ordered a bunch of oem from motorsport.com, really surprised at some of the deals they deliver. Even got a complete new seat for $111 and all the small parts I've needed too. :thumbsup:
Lectron in the house! Got a G2 throttle to go with it, 'cause that setup works so well on the 300.
Both calipers seem fine, so just cleaned, new fluid and pads and pins. Front brake hose is shite! Gonna replace it with a nice braided line when I rebuild the forks.
Got a TC2 and some other nice parts from a member here, thanks again bro!
Steering stem nut was wayyyy too tight, all looks ok and there was plenty of fresh grease, but action is rough. Will do bearings, seals, etc when I do the forks.

NOS off of ebay, ahhh the good ole days. Hope to get it back together and ride it this weekend.

More later :cheers:

Well, here she is. Srubbed and lubed from end to end (like my fav GF) ;) Yes, I adjusted the shifter before I rode it. No, the mud flap isn't touching the tire, but it's close. The flap is new and doesn't hang right. Gotta watch that Ti shock spring too, it's just a small fraction from both the swingarm and the airbox.

Still a 144 and still very stock looking, but I'm happy for now. Planning to ride it until it needs rings and then go 165. In the meantime sort the suspension and detail it out. All the plastic is beat except for the fenders, rear rim is 19" and pretty beat, need swingarm and stearing stem bearings and a bunch of other small parts. I need rad guards and a skidplate too.
The good stuff:
Lectron is fantastic, she started right up without touching the carb. Now super smooth off the bottom through the mid, need to fine tune the top, but it's close.
Dunlop D756 tires work very well, running HD tubes with 12 and 10 psi.
FMF TC2 is quiet until the PV opens then it's screamer, sounds great. Can't judge performance yet and still using stock pipe.
New gears and Regina chain, 13/49, rear Sunstar sprocket from Japan is light for steel and very well made. Only had a short ride today, but seems like she'll pull the gears.
New seat looks great and was a sweet deal.
Looking forward to putting some hours on it and prepping it for me, really looking forward to the 165 :banana: Now I need to refocus on the 300 which needs rings and clutch, to be race ready for the end of the month. Will be my first race in almost 2 years and my first ever on a Husky :cheers:

sounds like its just about set up already!
the lectron is no surprise..we all know the deal with those:cheers:
i run the sunstar steel stuff too. the price is right, fits well and lasts

Got most of the basics covered, but still a ways to go before I'm confident enough to take it way back in the forest where I like to ride. Plenty of single track and road running to do around my place in the meantime.
I got a Sunstar kit for my xr250 over 2 years ago, has about 50 hours on it now. Adjusted the chain once after the first ride and then a little once more at some point.Took it all apart and cleaned it recently and noticed virtually no wear on the sprockets. That's good stuff :thumbsup:
Lectron is 38mm with ms-3 rod. Lectron Kevin said they have new rods which are even better, so I got those for both bikes too. Stock rod length on this one is 49mm which would be really rich on the 300, but I think it's still lean on the 144. Like I said, starts right up hot or cold, but idle goes up and down and then wants to die. Runs good through the mid, then bogs (I think) on top. Would love to keep tuning and testing, but 10-15 overnight for the next few days and there's that work thing to do anyway.

more soon :cheers:

Looks like a nice find.

I'd recommed checking the reed valve- the corners can get chipped off. Another nice add is the FMF Fatty pipe.
