  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Tight - TE310

the 310 is a great tight woods mount but does not like to go more than about 45 MPH with the woods gearing. Super tight trans.

Little more open and some DS - TE449/511

the 449/511 is a great and versatile motorcycle but is still abig DS 4 stroke e-start bike so acts like one int he tight woods. Never the best choice for tight woods INHO.

I know you need a plate but if not look at the WR250 ior WR150. The best tight woods bikes of the bunch.

Ether bike will rip the plastic off the KLX in all performance categories. Huge upgrade IMHO. Enjoy.

Te 310 is a great "tight technical trail" bike. My mechanic changed my setting at the last service and the bike is much more frendly at higher speed, but still the punch at the botten was not lost. I have more than 1600 km on the bike and didn't regret the fact, that I went from 530 to 310. And I do prefere techical stuff rather than the speed. Of course the gearing is 13/50.

I loved my 449 and wish I still had it. But for tight technical stuff, I'm about 200% sure the 310 would be your best option. Take this for what it's worth... I've owned a 2010 TXC 250, 2010 TC 250, 2012 TC 250, 2011 449, and 3 new-frame 125/150's ('09, '11, '12). Like Motosportz said, the 449 is a great "do-it-all" bike, but if you're riding mostly tight stuff and very little fire road, pavement, wide open.... the X-light handling is vastly superior over the long haul in the tight woods.

Too bad you need a plated bike. If you didn't, you could opt for a CR or WR 125/150. Ride one of these babies in the woods and you'll see God.

TE310 for what you describe. Like Kelly said it won't do much more then 45 when geared at 13/50 but is ok for short road jaunts to connect trails and in the tight stuff it's much more flickable and lighter feeling then the 449/511 platform.

thanks for the tips. i got the 449. i was wanting a little more umph so it seems perfect so far. looking forward to stripping a few things our and putting in the power plug. anyone had the problem with the brake light not working upon levering brakes. or maybe it is triggered and wont let go. the running light is on and it seems bright.

I think it only works when the motor is running. You won't see Race Map II after installing the power plug unless it's running either. Grab some locktitie and hit the bolts!!! You'll love it though...good choice!

Taking off the unwanted items now. Took her in the woods for a second today. Liking the power. Seemed a bit difficult keeping the front up as it seemed to dive a bit. I guess I need to adjust three shocks a bit tomorrow. Got any tips on fork adjustments @ 195 lbs. Looking forward to the coming weeks getting this thing dialed in!

I have had the same problem on my 511 once after I spudded in, theres a little plactic micro switch where the lever connectes to the bracket just make sure that has not slipped from the little craddle its suppose to sit in and problem fixed. if all looks good there check the rear brake sensor switch which connects to the top of the rear brake master cylinder. food for thought any ways.

The bike may need to be running for all lights and switches to work as expected. I know, it's a friggin light, but some BMWs are that way and BMW designed half that bike...

Gratz on the new ride! Be sure to post some pics of it out on the trail at some point.

Confirmed on the light thing. Tried it this evening and only the running lights work unless the engine is turning over. Once you fire it up, normal brake light operation its there. I guess its a beemer thing. No Japanese or American bike acts that way. Guess I never noticed till now.

The woods by my house are so tight I had to put a hinge in the center of my frame.
Just kidding about the hinge.
but the trails are tight, I mean really tight.
keep saying I am going to change the gearing on my 449 but it is kind of my own personal challenge to get good enough to ride everything with stock gearing.
it's a hoot to zing through the tight stuff.
Our trails are ones we made for our horses and there is a lot of 180 degree turns followed by 90s up and down.
Point is the 449 will do the tight stuff.

Oh, One more thing.
I sold my wr250 to get my Husky.
Husky TE449 smokes the WR not even in the same league
kinda like comparing apples to zukinis. really.

It saves your battery. But if you're not aware of the behavior, it can cause concern where there should be none or make troubleshooting difficult.
