  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Ive been tuning the wr300 with the new lectron and I think Ive very nearly got it right. Im running a Rekluse exp3 which makes the idle thing a bit more tricky, still getting there.The idles needs to be a bit higher with that clutch.
There is a new noise which sounds a bit like a drum brake graunch, just off idle which goes away with revs, its not very loud but it wasnt there before.
My bike has always run a bit rich, with the mikuni and now Im still rich on the lectron but gradually leaning the rod a quater turn at a time. The plug still looks rich so im sure its not about to sieze and its really happy on song
Anyone got any ideas, or had a similiar issue?

Ive got 50 hrs on its first new top end so i dont think its very worn, I ride slow tech stuff mostly so it never really gets a thrashing

I've got a 300 with Lectron and EXP2, idle is the easy part just adjust as necessary. Unlike regular carbs, idle setting doesn't seem to affect performance with the Lectron. I often turn it up a little so that it idles smooth during warm up, then put it in gear and adjust if necessary.

I wish I had measured the rod length as delivered for reference, but according to Kevin at Lectron it doesn't really matter. Adjust the rod until it starts easy and is smooth from idle through mid, then adjust PJ so it's smooth on top. My rod is @ 50.5mm and PJ is 1 1/8 out, if that helps.
Exception may be if your idle screw is less than 1 turn out=lean rod setting. I like to be on the rich side, highly recommend a new plug(s) along the way.
Mine now starts 1-2 kicks cold with current settings and new iridium plug :thumbsup:
Plug always reads rich and I've got a rough spot I can't tune out, which makes me suspect a weak spark/ignition. That's nitpicking though as in general it runs great and is a complete blast both in the fast and open and tight stuff.

If it is a squeal when you take off that's semi typical for some rekluse clutches. You can call rekluse as they used to have an "anti squeal kit" All that said the squeal is not hurting anything.
 
you cant read plugs with modern ethanol fuel. they look rich when they arent sometimes. i strongly recommend you ignore the plug and jet according to performance and sound

Firstly Thanks for all your replies and Sorry if this is long but I think the full story is probably best :
Ignoring the brake type squeal for the moment,

When I first put the lectron in it ran great but seemed to lose the bottom end. I turned the rod in about half a turn which made it blubber everywhere. I then turned the rod out in quarter turn increments and it took me back past the original setting but still blubbered midrange and I had the idle screw right in to get it idling at all. I thinking the slide got a little bit stuck. So probably a full turn out it came good but idle was still all the way in.

I left it for a week because of work and then it wouldnt start. the plug was really wet and I put another in which just got wet ..20 kicks and nothing. I look for spark and yes it has some . I took the carb out and drained the gas out of it and then after about 20 kicks and blubber blubber blubber finally got her going. Now I figured this has got to still be rich right?
another quarter turn out on the rod and she runs great but idle still needs to be all the way in.

Next day started up fine from cold but I think with out the enricher out ..still could be rich?? also its not very cold in Sydney and I left it inside at work.

Took her to the trails and it just rips so I thought maybe a bit lean now....quarter in on the rod and blubber blubber ...OK no thats rich

so back to where I was and yep shes good..just want to sort that idle out

so a little more out on the rod ( glad I got the tool ) than I began the day with and idle is much better probably a turn and a bit out but it will idle a little high and then die down after about 20 seconds. I think my clutch drags a bit form new but the rekluse kind of masks that so I leave it idling a bit high so it doesnt stall down steep techy sections.

BUT i have this little squeal from the engine and its when the bike is in neutral which doesnt sound like the clutch.
Im worried that after all that its lean and starting to seize, now that probably sounds dumb but what noise does a 2 stroke make when it locks up?

Also Ive never touch the PJ this thing is now so scary on top I reckon its fine.

At the moment if I play with the idle screw it will affect the pull from the bottom I cant remember which way but a half turn or so in the wrong direction and it bogs a little

Good advise, but for me I haven't been on a 2t full time in a couple of decades! and I need all the help I can get with the fine tuning. Luckily I have non-ethanol, 93 octane available at 2 local stations. Still don't judge just by the plug though.

The idle screw physically raises the slide, so if you have to turn it all the way in the rod is lean.
If you blip the throttle with the bike warm and it hangs before returning to idle it's lean.
Not sure about the squealing and haven't ever seized a 2t.
One of the first things I did was turn the PJ out a 1/4 turn to 1 1/4 to make sure I wasn't lean on top. That also smoothed out the hit on top, but seemed to make the top a lot taller and stronger. Since went to 1 1/8 out and like it, nice hit when the PJ and PV kick in, but still manageable.

Have you checked for air leaks? Especially at the intake boot/reed block! One of the best related tips I found here was to use Honda cr250 intake gaskets, #14132-k23-880 is the part I use. I put one on either side of the reed block :thumbsup:

Update

squealing is the clutch :)

Lectron is purfect now and just an awseum addition to my 300 I may even take out the rekluse EXP
 
Glad to hear you're getting it sorted. Don't know about your riding style, but I'm completely hooked on the Rekluse now that I've gotten used to it. The combo of Lectron and Rekluse, even EXP2, seems perfect for me on a big bore 2t.

Yeah its almost too good
I rode a mates TE300 recently and it seemed to have a bit more bottom end but hard to tell with the rekluse.
Mine is a hell of a lot nicer to ride in the gnarly stuff and that was the one Jarvis used in Australia recently.Funny the owner was complaining he wanted more more power out of it but was getting stuck through lack of traction when my WR was cruising through the slop. When It seems like its about to bog I just give it more throttle and shes off again.
I would like the clutch to be a little lighter as I do use it still.
Anyone use a Moose EZ3 lever with an EXP 3?
 
I posted somewhere about installing EZ3 and Terminator cable and it's def worth the coin. Mine's 2 finger clutch now, so :thumbsup:
As posted elsewhere may be better to adapt a bit more and let the Rekluse do it's thing. Was suggested a lot of clutching could cause excess wear.
I was still slipping the clutch out of turns often and generally clutching and was getting some fade @ 2 hour into a ride and had to adjust play constantly too. Stopped most of that and no more fade or adjusting before every ride.
 
Mine is 2 finger with the EXP 3 so I guess I cant complain and yeah I use it to exit turns.Ill start using the gas more :) and see how we go
