• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

New Ignition for my husky

Hi guys

I am about to order new ingnition/coil etc for my 1978 125 wr. The coil that came with this bike was not orignial (Boch), and it seems impossible to find an old anywhere. The factory that made these shut down years ago, and people recomend to get one of these:

http://www.cyclesrus.net/pvl-powerdynamo-mzb-analog-ignition-system-husqvarna.html

(the bike has been running, but not by kickstar, just pulling after the car).

I think the system that is on my now is a Femsa ( I havent opened it yet due to the lack of a flywheel puller), I am basing this assumtion on the fact that according to the workshop manual, this model had two kinds, Femsa and Motoplat magnetos, and from what i can see through the flywheel, it looks like this is the femsa. The manual also says that the 125cc models had motoplate, and the Femsa was usally on the 250cc and up, so why this is on my bike I dont know.

So to the question.

If I am to buy the New Powerdynamo Ignition System Stator (the link abow) I says I have to measure the "Base Plate" and the "Shaft". Can anyone tell me what this is? Are they talking about the "Stator Plate"?

So if anyone has any tips for me I would be greatfull!

Does it run ok after pulling it to pop start it? Does it have spark when you kick it?
Do you have a carb problem?

It doesnt have a spark anymore! After the last time i pulled it to a start. The carb is brand new and the right fit for this bike.

if you can get away from using points and go to cdi all new ignition your ignition problems will be history. if you can afford it that would be a no brainer. get your puller to get it apart then you can take some measurements. points suck compared to a reliable cdi imho.

Joniver,
This ignition sure looks like a Bosch, anyone's guess how it got there. The Bosch magneto flywheel was characterized by two slots opposite of each other (photo below is the original Bosch flywheel off my 250). To my recollection, all of the Bosch point type magnetos were like this.

The Femsa magneto flywheel had the slots next to each other, as on my 400 below.

The crankshaft measurement they are looking for is the small end of the taper where the flywheel mounts. Should be .540 inches on all 125's until 1982? This is according to info found on Huskyclub, along with this image.

On the Bosch magneto there is an outer base plate that mounts to the crankcase and an inner that has the coils, points and condenser mounted to it. The diameter of the inner plate is 90mm (I just measured the one in the pic below), so if you are ordering the 90mm base plate you will reuse the outer base plate from your magneto to mount your new ignition base plate to. The Femsa only had a 130mm base plate with no inner adapter.

If cleaning the points will get it running for now while you look for a replacement cdi ignition all is good. I hate to see the old bikes just sitting.

Sorry, ran out of image room on the prior post. Here is the photo of the Bosch magneto, which I think you'll find behind your flywheel. It's been sitting in a box for years, apologies for the dirt. You can see the slots and screws where the inner base plate can be adjusted in relation to the outer base plate.
Hope this is of help to you.
Steve
PS. Still running points in my 400 with Femsa.

Clean and set your points , any cheep Chinese pit bike coil will do to test and will probably work full time.
While the old points ignitions left a lot to be desired they may have been more reliable than the more modern SEM CDI ignitions.
Cheaper to fix anyhow.

Thanks alot SteveJ. This really helps. I will write you as soon as I get the flywheel off. This explains why my coil is bosh aswell, but it doesnt belong on this bike. As I wrote earlier, it wont start without beeing draged after the car, even though the spark looks fine. After the last run i had, it died, along with the spark. That is why I am thinking to go with the modern solution. It this was the original, I would make it work, but I hate to have a bike that will be a pain in the ass getting started. I have one Royal Enfield that I think about drowning in the river 2 times a month, so I think that is enough.
Thanks again everyone. I love this forum. When it runs perfectly, I will strip i down, and fix it up 100%
