  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

New husky owner here, need some straight answers on parts and mods and whatnot.

I'm very new to the husky world and i picked up a 2006 smr 450 for $3000.00 with only 5k miles on her and first of all i gotta say i love the bike it's a blast.

I have one complaint however with husky in general it is pretty difficult to find parts for the bad boys. I've read a lot of the website list threads and whatnot and i have found them pretty helpful but i need a few specific answers.

I want to put some 1 1/8 bars on my new husky to make it feel more like my old dirtbikes with some nice cr hi bend bars. From the research i've done i found that renthal makes a universal bar mount for our bikes but i cannot seem to find an straight answer as to which part number i need to order for them to work on my bike. i've used these mounts in the past on some old yamaha yz's and they are very straight forward to install and use on the yz's. however i just need a straight answer as to which part number will fit my 06 smr 450.

Also i have seen and read many forums on the must do stuff for huskys but none that i have found are 06 smr 450 specific so im wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what i should look at and check on as far as tlc and some "must do" quick mods for the 06 smr 450's.

one last thing id like some specific info on is aftermarket levers. in the past i've ran asv's on all my bikes and id liek to do so on my husky but i can't find a straight answer on which levers will fit my bike without too much trouble if it's even possible. i know some other companies make levers similar to asv and thats fine with me too if anyone knows specific models and parts numbers for those thatd really help me out a lot.

Thats all i can think of as of now but thanks guys i appreciate the help in advance.227767_10151354966171998_167359153_n.jpg

Thanks for the link bud i appreciate it, i'll definitely check that out. I'm actually from Rockford illinois, the plate thats on their is from the previous owner and it's an iowa plate.

If you can possibly manage it - keep that bike as long as possible. GREAT bike.

If it were me, the first thing I would do is to take the carb off and check the jetting. Many 2006 keihins had a blank (no hole) leak jet in the bottom of the bowl, the AP (accelerator pump) completely disabled, a huge pilot jet, needle with a bizarre taper, and of course there was a throttle stop which prevented the throttle opening the full 1/4 turn.

http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/how-to-remove-throttle-stop-enable-the-ap-on-a-2006-te.1161/

And this is probably far more information that you wanted to know:
http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/in-search-of-snap…-is-this-stuff-useful.6411/

I've got a 2006 TE250 with JD kit jetted for my location, and the way it runs is really impressive.

Though keep in mind - you have no cush hub in your bike and you might want to try to refrain yourself from popping wheelies at every intersection. :)

Welcome, I am an hour south of you. We always go to Halls in Springfield. They can get you anything.

Also, there are other site sponsors that have aftermarket goodies, Motosportz, 7602, Brap, etc....

BMP up in Northwest/Motoxotica is good for parts as well. There are others and all great.

Try and use sponsors on this site because they help support this great place.

I've had my SMR for 3 years now, converted it to a 530 a while back. These bikes don't need much once initially set up. Halls Cycles for you is the best resource you will get. Keep up on oil changes, inspect those screens and prepare for rebuild once you notice more than normal debris. My bike only has about 1000 miles among 2 motors so I can't give you any indication of longevity. Just like any other thumpers, the bottom end takes a beating and once it lets go, it gets expensive. And being a husky may mean a longer wait for the hard parts.

I've never had any issues with Halls in Illinois, always had parts and pretty quick to ship. They have a catalogue on website: http://www.halls-cycles.com/default.asp?page=catalogs

I myself just picked up a 2007 Honda CRF 450 X with street equipment and uncorked, 650 miles - $3,200. But I did get a bargain. So Pumped!

Anyhow , enjoy the SMR450! Double check the clutch plates, brake pads, valve specs, etc. typical crud

Thanks for all the help guys i appreciate it, and coffee what do you mean by cush hub? never heard of it.

Darty maybe we can hook up for a little time in the bendys once it gets warm my husky needs to stretch her legs bad!!

Definitely thank you for the reliable dealers that was another question i had but forgot to ask.

can anyone shed any light on a specific part they used for 1 1/8 bars for thier bike. Are the mounts the same from bike to bike like if i find a thread about 510's will the parts cross over onto my bike. trying to get some parts on order.

I finally found a contact number for renthal and the universal 1 1/8 bar mount part number for the smr 450 is cl003 for future reference. FINALLY haha

hmmm, not sure the best way to describe it.

Here is a wiki entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cush_drive
Basically - it is some 'rubber' in the drive train, typically in the rear wheel, to have the bike 'give' a little so as not strain the engine drive train as much. Quite common on street bikes because there is much traction on the street with street tires. Not common with dirt bikes because the rear wheel can spin in the dirt easier.

I'm just suggesting to feather the clutch a bit on acceleration.

So even though my bikes a factory made bike for pavement it doesn't have this?

And i've got no problem with the clutch feather all bikes i had before this were strokers so shouldn't bother me too much to do it on the thumper haha

Most sm conversions don't have Cush so I would t worry about it to much. Of course there's a possibility. Marchesni's are the only after market wheels I can think of that have Cush. For the price of those though, you could have your motor rebuilt by a professional lol

gotya, well i won't be doing much track riding or anything just some trips to the bendys and riding to class everyday once it finally stops snowing here so i won't be all out romping on her too often. But no garuntees on the whole no wheelie thing haha

had an '06 510 smr, yer seat looks '07?? same dif. bikes a breeze to service and work on. zero issues. its a "race" motor, not a cruiser like an LC4. extended high RPM sessions on the freeway will kill it fast, like anyother hi-perf engine being buzzed for days. i treated it like a street legal dirt bike and focused on the short game its a short track killer not a freeway bike. used to truck mine to the canyons then bring the pain to the sport bikers in the twisties. cush drive aint nec. focus on short wfo blasts, not sustained cruising. valve inspect and adjust is a snap and it uses standard asian shims. check that every so often, usualy dont move after initial inspect. might try the CR hi-bend Renthal 7/8" bar or simply some spacers and longer bolts so you have more freedom of mounting your controls and barkies and save a ton of cash i think you have 1/2 to 3/4" enough slack for bar risers if i recall and i think Motosportz here has said spacers. SME and Motostrano make wheel sliders, can sliders et. al. tons of good rubber abound for it too. dont go wider on the rear if you dont have too it does little to nothing for more grip. levers are up to you i think there's some of them fancy one's avail from simliarly equipped street bikes with the brembo/maggy controls. loved mine- pic of first day home after whippin the snot out of it its insane fun and boogers up tires like crazy.

Tomorrow on one of my breaks from class i'm going to try to find a number to asv and crg to see if i can get a straight bolt on set up from one of them, i'll keep you guys posted on what i find out.

The RC bend is taller.

Yeah i know i'm not looking for a specific height or anything, i ran the cr high on my old dirtbikes so im just putting the same bend on the husky to make myself feel more at home on the new bike.
