Need A New Starter Motor For Te 610...but None Available Globally?!

Hey all,

My 2008 TE 610 starter somehow shattered all the magnets in the electric starter motor.

Does anybody have one sitting around they would sell?

New ones are not available say both Husqvarna and BMW; I missed a used one in Latvia a month ago and have seen no others for sale; a specialty starter rebuilder says replacement parts are not available; the only used TE 610 available in my area is listed at $5,600...

I'm hooped. I have a perfectly running, well-maintained bike I can only push start. ; (

Denso part number: 228000-5890

The same starter was also used on 2001 SM 610 / 2003 TE 610 / 2006-2008 TE and SM 610 (I may have missed others, but that's what I've figured out so far.)

630 starter looks just same,have you checked that? If its same,there is big possibility swm starter would be same.

I thought it might be the same starter, but the TE 630 part number is different: 800062729, which might be superseded by Z00062729.

Does anybody know if a TE 630 (or SWM) starter might fit on a 2008 TE or SM 610?

I'm in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Absolutely: if anybody nearby has a 630 I'd love to come measure your starter and compare it with the broken, depressing shell of my old starter...

I have both,but they are in use... Here is photo of 630,rear timing seems to be different than 610.(At 610 too much everything in front of starter to take picture,fuel lines,carb overflow lines etc. ) Or should i say main battery wire is attached in slightly different location.

Funny thing is that older engine i now have in 610 has starter mounting taps approx parallel to ground,and 05 original castings had them as it is in 630 picture. Same starter still in use. You might want to check starter gears,are they same,and starter o ring. Your money,but i am quite confident they are interchangeable.

Thanks for that photo, Ceevu. I'll try to compare it to my 610. Since I have everything removed, it might be easier to see it than on your bike. But I won't be able to compare the starter shaft length, diameter, teeth, O-ring... Your photo gives me a place to start, though. Much appreciated!

Starter clutch gear(torque limiter) same part no.(swm,610) swm starter is only 100e + expencies,so not end of world if there really is something weird. you can find o ring part no easily to compare.

Thanks to kirbybikes for letting me look at the starter on his 2011 TE 630 (part # 8000 H1772). We thought that starter (or SWM equivalent) might fit on my 2008 TE 610.

Unfortunately, while the TE 630 starter has a similar pair of mounting bosses and location of the positive cable mounting post, the overall length of the starter is about 3 to 4 centimeters shorter than the one on the TE 610 (part # 8000 84411).

Yes I saw the remains, there is no saving that particular starter. Hopefully one can be sourced some where, some how. Good luck in the search!

So where was the difference? Just from curiosity I measured my 630 and -05 610 carbed starters,both approx 130mm from mounting boss end to engine casing. 3-4cm longer outside would protrude over clutch side casing.
(this measurement is taken without dissassembling,so +-5mm tolerance...)

I believe a starter is enroute as a replacement. I'll text him and see if we can get an update.

Over all the the main difference I saw was in length. The 610 seemed to be about 3-4 cm longer. KevK was taking measurements but we did not remove the starter to compare.

The 610 starter is, as mentioned above, significantly longer. Thus, if the starter side is mated with the starter gears in the engine case on the left side of the bike, the mounting holes will not reach the mounting points on the right side of the bike.

...but, that doesn't matter -- because it's fixed!

It took almost two months of shipping, but a used starter arrived this week from "Kostenlos ebay" in Germany. It seems to be a local version of ebay, sort of a classified ad platform, with some minimal association with the ebay we're more familiar with.

Since it was unfamiliar and seemed a bit sketchy, and since my tracking number didn't arrive for several weeks (nor even work for a week after that), I was worried that I had paid about $400 for a scam.

But the starter arrived in good condition and with less obvious mileage on it than my old one. I opened it up, cleaned and greased it, checked its function, and installed on the bike.

Works perfectly.

Time to ride! Except winter. Time to dream about riding!
