  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

My 1st thumper is also my 1st Husky!

I guess I need a new username(I joined a while back but have never posted)! With the dealers discounting the 2012's so heavily, I couldn't resist picking up a new TXC 310. I'm having the bike shipped to me from California, it should be here(Texas) sometime next week. I'm looking for pointers on initial break in ride, weak points on the bike, and general info. I'm coming off of a KTM 150/200 conversion, the only recent thumpers I've ridden were the KTM 250/350/450, I loved the 350 but I read a few comparisons between the 310 and 350 and with the $$$ I'm saving on the 310 it was an easy choice.

I know I'll need the regular protection stuff: skidplate, handguards, radiator braces, brake fin.

How is the stock exhaust on these bikes? Any recommendations?

JD Tuner a must have?

Is there a mapping switch available similar to the KTM ones?

Nice 310 bike you have there and you should be able to give some interesting ride reports on this new breed of a different brand of motorcycle you just purchased ...

PS -- 1st thumper? There is a thing called engine braking on a 4t machine ... You just can't let off the throttle and roll on these bikes ... The bike will roll to a stop if you do ...

And on ~any jump, do not roll off the throttle till at least the front tire clears the lip or you're gonna do a WWII dive bomb type approach to the ground ...

Well, not exactly the first, I used to ride a TTR-125 when I was 13 but since then it's been YZ125, YZ250, KTM 250 XC, 150 SX, 200 SX conversion.

Welcome to the husky 4 stroke world. I am on a TXC 250. Basically same bike, minus some power. I absolutely love my 250, but I think a 310 would be the perfect bike for me. About 6'2 and 190 ish in full gear. I think you made a good decision. I ride with a buddy who is on a KTM 350 and my bike has no trouble keeping up with his as long as we are in the twisties. Out in the open the 350 has more with out a doubt, but in the trees the husky has the edge I feel.

Just go easy on it for the first few hours. Its going to get hotter than normal because of the piston ring and cam lobe contacts, so let cool well in between rides, lots of air flow. Change oil after first 30 to 50 miles, including filter. Check coolant often and put a wrench on everything possible and make sure they're snug. Smile while riding, like steve McQueen :D

Finally got the bike in and put together. I snapped a quick picture while the oil was draining

Here's a clip of the first ride out in the field behind where I work.

I only had limited time so I opted for jeans/christmas sweater over traditional gear haha.

Took me a few minutes to get used to the handling, especially in the snow, we don't get much of that in TX. Blowing up a snow berm is harder than it looks!

The first impression is that this bike is going to be amazing! The bike is very narrow and easy to grip with your legs. The roll on power is good, but I didn't get on it too hard. 3rd gear roll on wheelies no problem.

I'll have a real ride report after new years, and hopefully some helmet cam(I always forget it at home).

twostrokin, looks like I may be joining ya, I think I see a '12 txc310 in my near future, like maybe Monday lol. Hmmm, I guess I need to sell some stuff to make room.......

TXC should not require a JD Turners guy's were putting them on TE's because the map plan and simply sucked for most people. Exhaust is a mixed bag. I am running the stock exhaust on my 310 personally I am only willing to go aftermarket if it's gonna make the bike quitter than stock. I am good with the current power the bike makes sure it would be nice to have a little more but it's also nice to have $700 buck in my pocket. Besides protection and comfort things the bike is good to go! Just put miles and miles on it and you'll smile ear to ear.

Quick question about fuel. The tank has a sticker on it stating "unleaded fuel only". Is there any reason I can't run C12(a leaded fuel) in the bike?

I pulled my exhaust on 13 310 and looked thru it. I did not see a cat in silencer or header. I figured the decal was on there maybe for TE?

I have been running VPR in mine. I switched mine out back to back vs pump premium. Starts easier and have better throttle responce.

I also want to put an iridium plug in mine.

Ride Report:
A little background on me; last 3 bikes were a 05 YZ 250, 09 250 XC, and 11 150/200 SX(I converted it to a 200 at about 75 hours). B class enduro/harescrambles. The last 4 stroke I owned was a TTR-125(I was 13 haha). The conditions ranged from slick as ice mud(infamous caliche clay) to perfect in the more loamy/sandy sections of the park.

Pros: Very narrow bike, easy to pinch with your knees. This bike will flat out corner. It corners hands down better than my 200. Just point, lean, and twist the throttle. This goes for berms, ruts, or flat corners. I can't stress that enough about the bike. The controls are super roomy giving you plenty of space to get high on the tank. Brakes are the same as the KTM, so they're awesome(back brake was almost too strong in the muddy conditions, I need to adjust it's position so I'm finessing it more than stomping it). The power was good, especially coming from the 200. It had plenty of bottom end snap to lift the front end over obstacles. Roll on wheelies in 4th gear all day. Didn't get anywhere to hit 5th gear. I'm not sure how to exactly describe the suspension, I've got my Factory Connection tuned 200 suspension spot on for trail debris particularly at speed. The Husky boingers worked pretty good on most square edges, it soaked up whoops and roots/rocks pretty good. I need to take a couple of clicks of rebound out of the shock for log crossings. I'm going to give it more time to break in before I give my final assessment on the suspension. But for now it's good.

Cons: This is about the hardest seat I've ever sat on. I'll give it a few more rides to see if it breaks in nicely. If not, new seat foam will be on the way ASAP. The kickstand isn't the best, KTM's are better. I have to turn the EFI off to kill the bike, then turn it back on again to start the bike back up. That's more just a nuisance than a real complaint. Those are the only real cons I've got right now, I'll update this as needed.

I keep trying to find mods that I can do to the bike but it doesn't really need any. Just slap some handguards on and ride. In the future I may add a pipe and/or JD Tuner for the EFI but for now I don't see a need.

I'd actually never even ridden a Husky before I bought this one but the price was right so I took a shot, and I'm glad I did!

At least you somewhat some sort of traction. I rode mine on frozen ground and back wheel kept breaking loose and spinning. It was 19 degrees out.
