  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Hi guys! I have just bought this very cool bike. I have bought a new Bing32mm carb, I can see that there is a spark, but the damn thing wont start. The coil/ignitionpart does seem to be unoriginal, but I have a spark. The last owner has cut 2 of the three wires comming out of the engine to the coil, and made some kind of homemade solution. But, there is a spark, so I would hope that the engine would fire. But it doesnt.
Does anyone have any tips for firing this bike. I have never started it before. Maybe there is some kind of trick with the Bing carb that I am not doing?
If you have some tips, please let me know

ps: My plan is to get it started, than fully restore it.

thanks

three things required, fuel spark compression.

fuel....is fuel getting through ok? follow it from the tap to the drain on the carb..no pooh washed in from the tank? is it fresh fuel? is the airfilter ok? nothing in the way? float level ok? have you set it or just bunged the carb on?

spark... check the timing and try a second plug. it should be a motsplat ignition and the tech pages here will have the spec.

compression: does it have compression?, no engine seal leaks? no oil in the ign cover area? a leaking engine seal or gasket can prevent starting easily.

exhaust doesn't have a rats nest in it? blockage of any sort.

check the crank isn't full of fuel from a leaky tap or needle in the carb.

check the kill switch works as well! if it starts and revs out you will need it.

start with these and work through.....

good luck and get a picky up!

thanks alot!

I think all of this is working. The Carb is new, and I havent doent anything with the adjustments. I cant find anything on basic adjustmenst of the carb (bing32mm).

Any tips on that?

thanks again

I just got it started, after towing it after a car for a few 100 meters. It runds, and makes a hell of a sound, more that it should I think. A lot comming from the cylinder, so I hope all is good there. I could get it started with just the kick after I towed it, and when I towed it, I had to give it a lot of throttle for it to start. That means that it doesnt get enough fuel maybe?
Also, is there not any gasket between the top and the bottom cylinder?

nice little unit. it could have been full of fuel, did it leak out the exhaust and the muffler? only run once you held it flat out? blubber and 4 stroke for a bit then clean up?

does it idle?

they are rattly motors after the newer water cooled ones but you get used to it.

would pay to strip it down for a check up.....

spark-plug NOS ?
or possible
key motoplat !
what does that mean, key motoplat? I think I am using the correct sparkplug, but I will dobbelcheck. I bought a new, but only the same as the one on the bike. Maybe that was wrong as well.

I will set up the ignition again, to dubbelcheck that it fires correctly.
As I mentioned, the prevous owner modified the ignition, cut two of the three wires comming out of the ignition, to the coil. Dont know why, but I have a spark.
I saw that I can buy the whole thing NOS, but Why fix something that isnt broken

Does anyone know the colourcodes for this bike? I am planning a full restauration and would like to get it as close to the original as possible.

and, thanks a lot. Love a forum like this!

I doesnt leak out of the muffler.
It ran pretty close to normal (exept for a crazy rattling), but for it to start when I was dragged behind the car, I had to give a lot of throttle.
no, it doesnt idle

Do you know the correct procedure for starting with a carb like the Bing? I am not used to this at all. I have a harley and an enfield, but this is something else.
Do you press the tickler to fill the chamber full before starting?
