    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

MT90 Tire size and rim choice for 2006 TE610. Help needed

Hi,

I'm a new 610 owner. I've searched until my fingers fell off, and I can't find good info on rim size. I have a stock 2006 610, which I want to run with MT90's for a 3000 mile 80/20 trip. Looking in the manual, I see rear is 140/80-18, so I buy some because of a really good deal, not registering that street size is not equal to knobby size having never run street tires on a dirtbike. oops.

The 21" front seems like it will take the 90/90-21 on a 1.6" fine. The current rear is 2.15" and I get conflicting info from Pirelli's website and googling.

1st Q: Will a 140/80-18 MT90 be too wide for the 2.15" rim? Unsafe? I'm leaning toward yes.
  1. According to the Pirelli 2014 fitment guide (big pdf, page 107), it seems to fit, but they don't list years.
  2. Using their tire selector on the website, they say they have no tires that fit. hmmm.
  3. A 2007 fitment guide (smaller pdf, page 8) indicates that 140/80 should be on a 3.5" rim, and a 2.15" can run a 110/80
  4. Googling seems to indicate people running MT90 in 140/80-18 on stock wheels, but people do crazy things.
2nd Q: What do I really want for this bike? I'm 80% going to have a RAD cush hub laced up to a new Excel rim so I can just swap out easily. Should I just buy a 2.5" rim and return the brand new 140 for a 120 or 110/80-18? Which would be the better choice? Will it fit?

I have a set of mt90's that came on my TE630, however, I don't remember what size they are and won't beable to check until Thursday. I do know that what ever size they are, they worked well. I put over 3000 km on them in mixed riding before I got SM wheels and put full knobbies on the dirt rims. They were good on gravel, worked in single track, good on the highway and surprisingly good in the twisties.
 
Just checked some photos on my phone. 95% sure it's a 140/80. For reference, my judgement of pavement performance is based on familiar twisty roads in southern BC, roads, that I've taken on my Hawk GT and Sprint ST in the past, wearing sport touring tires. I carried a similar pace and had as much fun on the husky as I did on the others. I don't race on the street, but I used to roadrace, so my comfortable pace is quite high. Just wanted to give you some background to go with the opinion. Here's the pic.
 
Thanks for following up. I can just make out 140 upside down at the bottom in the full res version. The 120 also looks noticeably skinnier. I did go ahead and buy a 2.5" rim with a cush hub, so I can't imagine it would be a problem if you pushed it pretty hard on a 2.15" stock. I ride my Triumph street triple pretty spirited, but won't push this one nearly as hard. Nice looking bike. I would have loved a 630, but jumped on a 610.
