  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Motocycle USA MX Shootout

255lbs without fuel ouch!!
I know my '11 TXC449 which I've motoed feels quite heavy when any jumps are involved and at that weight I'm sorry to say the new 449 platform is at a serious disadvantage in the moto world. No matter how balanced and well it carries it's weight that is just way too much of a handicap to overcome and I've spent many hours looking over my TXC449 trying to see where you could possibly shave off weight and I just don't see it with the current design. I'm guessing the BMW inspired engine is quite the porker?
Too bad because the engine is imo actually quite good for most of us mere weekend mortals and the chassis turns well and has some really good traits but the weight I must agree is quite the hurdle to overcome regardless of skill level. Not so bad offroad I've found but definitely holds you back at the track. Again I think it's great for GP style terrain , desert and offroad but not so much for todays current jump infested MX.

Who knows how the 449 engine was tuned before delivery? Maybe some CH guys should tune it before it arrived for testing...

As far as weight goes, you gotta make parts smaller and lighter across the board ... Starting with the engine and frame ...

Owning a Te511 and looking it over a bunch I don't think it is the engine per say. This engine to me looks a lot smaller and more compact than the last generation of husky 4 strokes. If it was kick start it would be 9-11 pounds lighter. The frame seems overly complex and could loose 3-5 pounds EZ i bet. The two tanks, mounting point, hardware and associated hoses probably are not the lightest ways to do things, say 3 pounds, the rest is standard far for the most part but there is your almost 20 pounds of baggage. This bike was not purpose built stripped and hotrodded with many years of evolution for a specific purpose like the rest in that group were. It still got some real good remarks and they said it is in the hunt. It is what it is. Bet it would be a GREAT vet and local track play bike.

I'm a 52y/o vet rider and I'd say if you're purely looking for a MX 450 that the other choices are without a doubt better weapons and much easier to go fast on. Don't get me wrong I like my TXC449 and had a spin on a '11 TC449 and as far as MX goes the excess weight definitely holds the 449 back in comparison to the other offerings.
Now the '12 TC250 platform on the other hand has no need to take a back seat in comparison to the the other 250Fs for us vet/weekend warrior I'm happy to report. Yeah it's not the fastest but it's very competitive and more then makes up for it with the excellent light flickable chassis and handling traits it possesses.

Needs to lose weight but i think the test riders like familiar things & the Husky is too different. Granted the test riders were very kind and optimistic to the Husky but gassing behind the seat & the air filter in front is too much for them. Everything seems to be about weight. Maybe they should take the starters off the KTM'S & the Husky & retest! I'm sure if they were in a race & stalled it in a corner they would welcome those bikes over the others & get better results. Seems bias to me but I'm probably bias also! :D
