    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Modern clutch basket

Hi...somebody installed a modern clutch basket from a 610/99 on a 1983 2T model?
It seems that the small gear is different, smaller on the modern one.

what are you trying to do? get a bigger clutch? the later 6 spring clutch from a swede will fit, and is a good bit bigger. its similar to the four stroke clutch as well used into the 90s. will have to swap to later cover, good time to use four stroke cover.
 
They probably did that to get the better primary ratio, especially if its a 430. I do that on all my 430s and when I have convinced friends to do it they are astounded at how much easier they are to start.

The primary ratio, which effects how fast the crank spins when you kick start, is off on the 430. I use the 400WR or 250 crank gear and clutch basket, preferably the 400. They both have smaller crank gears which spins the crank over faster with each kick lever stroke, but the 250 is a little too much and the kick lever effort is a little high. With the 250 primary gears it will also cause the 430 clutch to slip so you have to add the 84+ plates which are thinner and allow an extra fiber plate in the stack. With the 400WR primary gears starting is massively easier because the engine actually spins over enough to start.

So what parts are from the 610?
 
The clutch and primary gears of the 610 will swap into the 2 strokes as long as you use the matched set.
Thanks, Kartwheel68. I'm familiar with the different ratios of the 2t engines. Seems something like 1.7 for the 500 to 2.4 on the 250? I didn't know the 610 gave an additional option. Have you the tooth counts from the 610 series and did they change over the production life cycle?

I've been perusing the 610 forum and seems the clutch basket is a cush unit? Springs interposed between the basket and gear. Sounds attractive but also seems to be a maintenance issue with this system. Tooth counts seems 32/75 or 2.3?

Fran, seems the part numbers for the kick and idler gears remained unchanged for the various combinations of clutch / primary gear sets. Consider the kick / idler gears mate with the clutch hub center gear while the primary gear engages the clutch hub "ring" or outer gear.
 
i think you are looking at the italian design 610..the left kicker thumpers are what you want to stick with...the 610 moniker was carried on after cagiva created their own four stroke design
 
The kick and ilder gears changed with the solid steel basket in '84, the earlier clutch basket is not compatible, to be safe just get the whole thing.
 
The intermediate gear is the same part number for 1988 and 1999 not 83. The 1999 clutch does not seem like a damped unit.
 
You guys are confusing the TE 610 and the TE 610E & TE 610IE. You guys want the TE 610 which might be also know as the competition bike. The other 2 models are street bikes with off road capability. The street bikes have cush clutch hubs for street use. There was also a TC 610 which is the brother to the TE 610.
