• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

MOAB trip in few weeks...which bike????

HUSKYnXJnWI

Husqvarna
AA Class
I have never been to MOAB and am going with a group that has- and they are all better rider's than me. Apparently we are going to be doing 5miles of hell (5moH). Bikes get loaded next weekend.

I guess I had my heart set on taking the 09TE450 but if we are going to be doing more trials type stuff than cross country- I should reconsider and take my Other bike. First I am short (5'5"), so I am tippy toes on the Husky- I ride on the pegs and try not to dab. LOve the bike for over 10 mile per hour stuff- very plush suspension. I can pretty much climb anything in a straight line with it- but it gets hard if there is switchbacks and such.

My "other bike" is a 2002 Ktm 250f exc with a HT racing 351 big bore kit. The suspension has been lowered internally. This bike is very nimble and I have alot of confidence/experience with it. I have great ballence with this bike at speeds to zero mph. So its like my trials bike.

I guess my impression of Moab- based on videos and stories- is that the TE450 would be great in most circumstances- but when challenged- seeing some video of 5moh- I might wish I had the other bike. I just don't know what percentage of which kind of riding I will be seeing out there. I have been told "it doesn't matter what bike", bring the KTM for nimbleness, and bring the Husky for plushness. So I would appreciate any opinions. MOAB will be a new experience- I ride woods single track. Not used to traction like that and not climbing/descending all day.

guess- I am getting excited to go- wish this place was in my back yard-
Thanks:thumbsup:

Take the KTM. If you have not been it is way more technical than you might think. I liked my 125 better than The 08 KTM300 i had with me. A light 2 stroke is the ticket IMHO. No need for big power at the stuff i rode, very low average speeds and lots of step up and step downs. Technical. Plus your bike is going to take a bit of a beating, might as well beat the KTM. Does it have a rad fan? Will need one. Make sure which ever one you take has a good skid plate and rad guards. Also run whatever tires you have one it. Don't bother with mounting new. Everything hooks up on that rock and it eats tires up quick.

Take the KTM: lower seat hieght, lighter weight, easy to fix, and if you have any problems all the guys you are going with have KTMs, and wil have some basic spare parts. If you have problems with the Husky they will all just look at you and shrug thier shoulders.

I rode 5moh on a yz250f. I couldnt imagine riding my te250 there.
The videos do not do it justice.
I think a 85 or a trials bike would be the best fit for that trail. Or maybe a mountain bike:excuseme: lol
Its an awsome place to ride, but you wont need the 450. Ill try and dig up some pics

5moh is the one trail that I really want to get to. Always seems to be a bit high for last week in February when I can go. Actually a lot of the San Rafael Swell is a little to high for February and I miss it every year. If I could talk someone into an October Moab trip it might be the best time to go there. Still warm but after the crush of the main season.

Walt

PS, Moab weather averages for October: Normal high= 70; Normal low= 40 Damn that is perfect

we didnt do any moab riding just San Rafael Swell. its awsome riding.
its marked pretty well from where we were camped. plan to spend a whole day on 5moh. the rest of the time is just fun riding with awsome views. :applause:

Never been but want to. I've seen video many times. I vote for the KTM (but I think you kinda knew which was the right bike when you posted this). And post pics when you get back! :)

I've ridden it on a ktm300 and a ktm200. I'm sure I could ride it on my fe550, but i'm more comfortable on a lighter bike in that kind of terrain. Heck, my gf rode it on a 250xcw, and that bike to her is like an xr650l to me.

My trail selection for my rides in moab depends a little on which bike i have with me. If you can really only take 1, and you're going to do 5moh, i'd take the smaller one.

fwiw, we usually bring a spare bike, just in case.

Thanks guys-
I will go over the ktm for the trip- I love both bikes- very different. I'll load it up this weekend. Sad to leave the husky home, can't bring both though.

avoid Moab during springbreak...youll be very unhappy, tons of college kids, war protesters, ect..
wait a week or 2 after,,and have fun.

I don't care if town is crowded. I think I actually like it better then. Except for the jeep jamboree, the trails are generally not crowded.

actually I am loading it to get to the guys in the crew that are trailiering the bikes- fly out on 04/08/10- so we should be good.

Have fun!! The riding is great some sand but more tech stuff. The KTM will serve you well. When I went with Walt and the guys Myron was riding a KTM 250 and he said it was much easier than his 450 Husky. The power is not needed. Chris
