  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

250-500cc Lowering a WR250 subframe?

I did one on my '00 WR250, 10 plus years ago. Cut 10mm from the lower brace, close to where it bolts to the frame and have them re-welded. Works well.

Well, after some technical trails on Saturday, I have to say I'm seriously considering selling this bike. I just can't deal with the height of the thing. But I've put a lot of time and money into it. I wish there was some way to fix this without lowering the suspension and without lowering the subframe. The subframe lowering combined with shaving the seat was top on my list, but with the airbox boot being so tight already due to the lectron, that's out the door. I guess I'll shave the seat, but that will only buy me a half inch or so.

Any other suggestions?

For reference, here's the number one issue that comes up: When I come up to a tight uphill switch back and get the bike in at about a 45 degree angle and need to pivot turn to get it the rest of the 90ish degrees around. But my front tire is inevitably higher than my rear in this scenario. So I cannot touch the ground on the inside of the turn while keeping my outside foot on the peg. No chance of a pivot turn in that case. And, frankly, when I'm hanging off the bike like that I rarely can hold it up unless I'm standing absolutely still. It's just too precarious.

Scenarios similar to that repeat themselves all the time. Like again on saturday, I hit some slop and got my front wheel up off the trail on the left. Now my bike is at an angle with my rear tire in the slightly trenched trail. I needed to put a foot down and pivot turn over some wet branches that were between my front tire and the trail. Not even possible to get my right foot on the ground. But I tried anyway and dumped it.

Have you ever considered a kouba link?

We ride a lot of tight switchbacks up and down, that are just a bike width. I have totally screwed knees and almost never pivot off my foot. Lighter bike is better, way easier on my 125 2T, than my 250 2T.....

Just curious how tall you are , I had the same bike and traded it in for my Beta for the same reasons you state. After riding the Beta for the last 2 years with the lower seat height I think I would have been happy on the WR if it were about an inch and half lower.

I'm 6'1", but I guess I'm one of those folks that has a long torso and short legs.

Doesn't look like Kouba makes a link for the 250. Only the 125 and the 4 strokes.
I was looking at the difference between the beta rr and the wr. Looks like the ground clearance is lower on the beta. So I guess I wouldn't be too bad off with lowering links if I could find them. The trick will be getting the front lower too. I already have the forks slid up for tighter steering.

Yes the Beta is lower to the ground but I have not had any issues with it and ride pretty much the same stuff you do. I'm 5"10" with a 32" inseam , I can not flat foot when sitting on it but still can dab a foot with confidence because it is lower. If you want to try mine this winter pm me.

6'1" and your seat is too high!!! You must be built like foghorn leghorn. Lol.

Just a thought but have you measured / adjusted your rear sag correctly? Should be around 4" from full extension.

I wear pants with a 31" inseam. I run slow

I believe I'm at between 120 and 130 mm on the rear sag. Front, I'm not sure. I'm going to be checking the front as a part of this.

Check out this image. I'm thinking maybe I can cut the subframe where the red lines are and not have to mess with the airbox. Alternatively, maybe where the brown lines are. That's what the seat itself rests on...
