  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

FE/FC Looking for some FE501 Feedback

No kidding. I finished mounting the new tires last night and my rear tire was worse than the front was. I've never bought a bike that had such poorly setup rims. My guess is my rims were laced by a crack smoking chimpanzee:busted:

I balanced the wheels after unf*#king them and it's 100 times better now.

How much weight did the back and front wheel take for proper balance? Did you place the weights opposite the rim locks or did the balance require placement elsewhere?

Would be interested in knowing the results of your reflash with the unrestricted mapping.

I'll post up tomorrow night after halls does their thing. I'm nervous and having second thoughts because I dont have any flameouts to speak of. Just the heat issue. I hope it doesn't lead me into the weeds.
I used two stick on wheel weights opposite the rim locks and that did the trick. No idea what they weigh? Very happy with how smooth it cruises at 60mph now. No more front wheel bounce or vibration.

Little update

Went ahead and located some 1/4 ounce stick on weights and then stuck 3 oz on the front and 3.5 oz on the back directly across from the rim lock. They certainly are not the most aesthetically pleasing but I was not able to find them in black.

Took the bike out down the freeway at 80 mph(14/50 gear set) and the smoothness was night and day. I debated about just bringing the wheels into a dealer and having them balanced but thought I'd try this alternative first. Seemed to work very well just as my friend found with his 500 EXC.

Also I ordered a Sicass dual sport street legal kit that included everything I needed besides the mirrors for MN license plate compliance.
Was a bit more effort required to put everything on than I anticipated but overall everything works. I feel the directions could be improved upon. It was actually pretty difficult to tuck all the new wiring behind the headlight since there is only room above the actual back of the light. I now have both low and high beam, brake light, switch gear, horn, keyed switch and blinkers. I bolted on my TE630 salvaged Highway Dirt Bike guards after procuring a new top plate to fit this bike. Really got some odd looks during my test ride on the freeway tonight ripping along at 80 mph. Love the bike so far. Have a seat concepts saddle on the way along with a Acerbis 4.1 gl tank.

Mixing it up last Saturday on the first ride which was 268 miles for the day with a KTM500 EXC here in the north woods (MN/WI)..

Nice! Glad you're enjoying the new bike. I just crawled back into the house. Had a long day. Took the bike to Hall's and got a re-flash and on my drive back home a buddy called me and asked if I wanted to join him for a ride. Ended up riding some tight knarly trails for a few hours and the bike ran good but still pretty hot.
FYI, watch your front fender brace hardware. I looked down at noticed the fender brace bolt rattling and I lost the nut from underneath. I just ordered a couple replacement nuts from Munn racing. I have a zip ty in there now... I'll be using thread locker on that baby when it comes in. It's a special nut from what I can tell. Can someone please take a picture of the inside of their front fender so I can see exactly what the nut looks like? Maybe I can do something temporary if I know what it looks like. TIA

just seems like a thin fastener.. nut..so that it won't risk coming in contact with the tire. Could you just purchase one at the hardware store and dremel/grind it thinner?

As for my avatar.. nickname from my teen motocross days and used to identify me when announcing winners..

I'll be happy if I'm NOT fast at wearing this bike out..

Cycle Buy has factory Husaberg OEM parts

Fast1 Bike looks great. BTW lead rope fishing weights wrapped around the spokes work great and disappear well.

Glad you sorted it fast1 but jeez that's piss poor from husqvarna. That you have to sort out a massive speed wobble on a brand new expensive piece of machinery

Was the same on my TE510 and the new KTM 500 EXC and 500 XC-W or for that matter any bike with rim locks. Certain types of tires can contribute to similar issues.

What are you using for oil on the 501? Did you change it at 1 hour like most others seem to do?
Sweet looking bike you got there!

Perfect question at just the right time. On my 501, I changed the oil at 1 hour and had some crap come out. I chose to use Motorex 10-50 like KTM recommends. I have 6.5 hours on now and changed the oil today and switched to the ZipTy recommended 0w40 Mobil 1. Seems to run fine and it shifts softer and less notchy then before. I also installed a PC racing reusable stainless high flow oil filter. The combo of the oil and filter is supposed to reduce wear and increase flow. I will see how it goes during the CADVR next weekend. The rally runs from Aug 1-10th and I'll be riding between 120-225 miles per day. The trails are open and fast but fun. I may even do an oil change half way through the rally since the bike will be seeing 30-40 hours easy.
I also did a valve check today. The exhaust valves were in range but the intakes were pretty tight. I had to adjust the intakes. The entire job is really easy and by far simpler than my 310 was. Everything is easy to get at and no special tools required. Rocky Mountain ATV has a great video on their website that helped me out as well. I watched it a few times last night so I had confidence this morning. The 501 is all ready to tear it up at the central ADV rally:cheers:

If you are referring to me.. yes I did dump it at 1 hour after 24 miles of easy hard pack up and down the rpm range from 1st through 6th and back down again for the deceleration phase (restricted of course to less than 1/2 throttle on the run up through the gears). Used 10/50 Yamaha semi-synthetic and now will dump it again after my last 268 mile ride and fill with 10/50 full synthetic. My choice will be Castrol 10/50 full syn or Motorex.

Reveille.. thanks for the insight on the valve check.. Is the 0/40 mobile 1 (wet clutch specific) or just the automotive oil? I noticed that the manual has some specific oil requirements which not all bike specific lubricants have.

Yep it's wet clutch safe. A bunch of us here on the Cafe have been using it for a while with good results. Oil is very personal so use what your used too. 10-50 is too heavy IMO for a bike like this. The heavier oils have been caving in folks oil filters due to high pressure and low flow. Both of those facts are not good for a tight tolerance bike.
