  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Long road trip on a 2009 TE250

My wife wants me to travel with her on a trip. It will be one way to help with the kids and then I can ride back. I have a reciever bike carrier but my normal road bike, a KLR, will be very heavy on the back of her Saturn Vue. I am thinking about taking the TE250. The trip will be about 550 miles. Besides being much less comfortable and small tank, what else should I look out for? What sustained RPM should I use? Does anyone have experince with a larger counter sprocket to drop the RPM? There are no mods to the tank or exhaust besides the normal power up. I know it is not ideal. I just do not want to cause any damage.

I realize this doesn't help you, but I have the same bike, and would not even consider a trip half as long as that on mine.

I have done a 300 mile dualsport on it. That was over two days but included alot of sections where I was hard on and off the gas. A more steady throttle should be much easier on it.

I've done over a thousand before on my 08 TXC250 ... Never REVED it past 6G on the hardtop ... Ran 14\50 gearing so it was slow for american standard of speed .... But this was the reason I went to a 4t machine over a 2t ... I knew I was gonna be doing street riding and a 4t engine just naturally beats a 2t engine for ease of riding here ...

Just gear it up as much as possible ... Maybe a 15T on the front anything under a 50T rear is a plus .... Maybe get some dual sport tires ...ESP for the front .. Knobbies up front just aren't smooth ... And tie a pillow to your buttt or get some silicone injections as that seat will cause permanent damage ... You might wanna change the oil at the 1/2 point also ...

The only damage you should do is normal wear and tear on the bike ... How many rides does it take for you to go 550 miles normally? If you do this ride, you are gonna accelerate this mileage going on the bike ... Also, you should get seriously high gas mileage just cruising down the road ... ESP if you can keep the speed on the lower side ...

I have a 2012 TE310 with 14/40 gearing and if your butt could take it, it's about 50 mph and 6200 rpm. Pretty sure I wouldn't be interested in it on my other bike with 14/50 gearing 7200 for the same speed,

I wouldn't do it on my Te 250 but if I had to I'd try to get 15/40 gears and wear a pair of bike shorts with thick padding.

The TE 250 is not a street bike...I would'nt do it ever...now the Kawi you have...no problem and its going to ride just fine for a short time on the back of the VUE...good luck.

It can be done;

15-47 gearing (minimum) This will allow you to cruise at about 60 mph
Airhawk seat cushion - like sitting on a cloud
Spitfire windshield- trust me on this.
Wear a full face street helmet with ear plugs.

This combo will get you close to 80 mpg on the highway.

I did 130 one day on my TE250. Used dual sport tires and 13/40 sprockets. The stock seat is bad after an hour but I'd do it again with my Seat Concepts seat.

I'm starting to see some possible wisdom in ear plugs. Sometimes the noise resonance is substantial inside that helmet (full face with visor.

I wouldn't sweat it, I have done 200 plus days and im on 12/50 gears. This engine is designed to rev 12k plus rpms, running 7k isn't going to kill it. He'll, I run 9500-10000 on my GSXR everyday to work and back, 22000 miles so far, and it redlined at 15.5. Carry a quart of oil if your sweating the wear and tear, and do a quick oil change half way home. The 13/40 stock gears should be fine.
