  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Loading Steps

I'm on a tight budget and needed a ramp (I'm short and my bed is high) so I took a 12 foot 2x12 and cut it in half, then attached them on the long side with 2 door hinges and added a ramp top kit. I can unfold it and have a 2' wide ramp to walk up with my bike into my bed (with it running) and when I'm done it folds into a compact size. Costs me like $30 and works great if anyone is looking for a cheap alternative.

I would be afraid of missing a step, especially on the way up. Maybe a couple of decades ago, but I am not all that sure footed these days. I just use two ramps; one for the bike and one for me to walk on.

The steps are big , its very stable . Pricey but I needed something .

That's very clever.

<Devil's Advocate>

What do you do for the third bike? You know, the one in the middle (sometimes loaded backwards)?

I bring an old school milk crate as a step and something to carry stuff in

Just ride it up !

I like riding it up too - but when hauling three bikes, that third one can be "tricky". I guess you could fire a 2S up popping it backwards!

The trucks just keep on getting bigger. A riding buddy just got a new Ford (Ecoboost - very nice ride) and that sucker's bed is TALL. Every now and then you will see an early 70's 1/2 ton next to a new F150 or Tundra and they look like toys!

I think I have seen more grotesque injuries loading bikes compared with riding. I do think there are some untapped markets here still.

I use a $15 plastic step stool from home depot, but I need to get a running start with the bike and am always afraid I'm going to miss the stool, or that it'll slide out when I step on it. If I trusted myself, I would ride up, but Imaskeerd.

Not any more! Too many bad memories.
1978. A 1966 Chevy 1/2 ton, A 2x6, A Honda cr250 and me at 195 lbs. My buddy who had a 125 yz and weighed about 140 lbs. said I couldn't ride up the 2x6 into the truck. Well I got the half the bike into the truck when the board broke. The frame caught the tailgate right at the swingarm pivot of course and over backwards we went. I ended up on my back with the handlebars on my neck. Scratch another rear fender.

You got that right! We were loading up into a lifted van-one guy was inside to grab the bike and when I took a running start to get the bike inside the ramp just shot out from under the wheel and hit my buddy in the face-definitely left a scar:eek:

I like the smart step idea, however it needs to be able to pivot for uncoordinated people like me that can only push a bike from the left side. I would have to push the first one up, then work it over to the left side of the truck, then push the second one up.
Me and my 310 took a wild tumble out the back of my Titan last fall when I hit the dew on the tailgate with my foot while loading. I was able to stay out from under the bike but we both ended up on the ground.
Now I just hook up my trailer that is nice and low, has a big ramp and has bike shoes mounted. I can ride any of my bikes(street or dirt) right up and into a bike shoe, then tie it down. I will suffer the 2mpg less on the drive to/from the riding area. Also, at the end of the day and I am tired as hell, I can simply ride my bike onto the trailer.
Yes, I am getting old. :oldman:
