  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

lLeft Side TE310R Fuel Tap Open Screwed Up or Down?

Weird thing happened to me. I picked my TE310 up from the dealer after having the valves shimmed and I ran it for an hour before noticing that both petcocks were turned off. How could that be possible? Dunno but it did... Maybe my bike makes it's own gas? LOL

I'm assuming the fuel tank setup is the same for the TE and TXC. I thought it was odd when I bought the bike that it had the petcock. Fuel injected bikes typically do not (fuel pump inside the tank). The only purpose for those petcocks is to allow fuel to more easily flow from the right side to the left side of the tank.

The tank is shaped like an upside down 'U' (as it is on many bikes). It is very possible to have fuel on the right side of the tank which cannot get to the left side (where the fuel pickup is located) without tipping the bike on its side. The Husky setup helps keep this from happening. The guy at Hall's who gave me the rundown on the bike said he leaves the petcock on the right side closed (left side always open) and uses it as a reserve. Seems like a good idea.

<rant start> It's absolutely ludicrous to manufacture a motorcycle with an 85 mile range. Don't ask how I know that number. <rant end>

I agree. But if you think that is bad...the 2012 WR450F I just sold came with a 2.1 gallon tank. With mileage in the low to mid thirties it was all but worthless for trail riding. I put an IMS 3 gallon tank on it and would get really nervous when trip length got to 90 miles. For comparison a riding buddies older carbureted WR450F got about the same mileage. For some reason Yamahas seem to be quite a bit below average for mileage.

I am getting my usual motorcycle average of 85 miles till reserve and an estimated 110 per tank (this with a new right side petcock/sensor, all dirt but not slow, steep, or wot). My old 400 and 550 were exactly the same. Running open map 3 as well. Have been checking carefully on fill ups so I have a good estimate if my guage fails again.

I get 100 regularly with my TE310 with TXC ECU and 12 hole. Never took it past 100 though. I get 45 mpg or better and it doesn't seem to change too much with terrain. Been happy with the range and if I want more the IMS is nearly 3 gallons. I have heard the red heads get less mileage though. Bigger EFI I recon.

The weird thing was I coasted into the local biker bar (Cook's Corner) and a guy offered to call AAA for me. I drank beer and listened to a 70s rock band until the tow truck showed up with the gas. I'm not sure if I was lucky or unlucky.
