    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Left Side Panel Melting 83 500CR

The left side panel on my 83 500CR is melting from exhaust heat (see photo). I've tried to reposition the panel, but there is just not enough clearance to make a difference. Is this a common concern on the 83 panel? If it is just a distorted panel then I will buy new ones, but don't want to possibly damage a new one. Anyone try exhaust header wrap like the automotive guys use? Suggestions appreciated.

When I bought the machine, it had 84 tank and plastics installed (which I replaced with 83 parts). The left 84 panel bulges out farther and has insulators pop riveted inside (shown below) Were these insulators a factory installed item? Not sure if the 84 panel will fit with the 83 tank, but I'll probably try it tomorrow. Anybody know if the 84 panel will fit with the 83 seat and tank?

the rubber and pop rivets arent factory, but i install almost the same thing on any dual shocker i have had..
 
Try some thick oven grade aluminum foil under it. Maybe you could wrap the pipe in it. The foil is a heat sink and will disperse heat.

They fit just fine, i've got a 84 side panels , but a 83 tank & seat on my 84 500CR.... Husky John

Yes, the 4mm thick black urethane sheet was made by Trelleborg in Sweden and was fitted to the inside of all 2t panels from 83 and 84.

Thanks to all for the advice. I think I'll go with the 84 side panel since it has the insulators. I'll just add 83 decals as ruwfo did.
 
I recently restored a 1980 YZ 465. They use little rubber plugs that fit into a small hole in the Plastic. The Plugs rub on the Pipe and hold the Plastic away from it. Invariably they probably get lost and many a Yamaha has melted Plastic. However, they are still available new, and would fit any bike.
 
The guards were factory. 83 and 84 are interchangable on 83 tanks....only left side on 84 as the 83 right is longer in front and does not "cookie cut" fit like a puzzel on an 84 tank
