• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

sorry for this sort of simpleton question but I am putting my 1983 cr 250 back together today and the left side crank shaft seal should be facing which direction??flat surface inward or outward.thanx, dan

Dan the flat part of the seal should be next to the crankshaft, open part facing the bearing.

Make sure the seal you put back in has two sealing lips - one from each side to cope with crankcase compression and crankcase vacuum for drawing oil in from the clutch side...

Hmmm,
Well the seals I got and about to install are sold as "top quality" Viton rubber seals ...BUT I don't believe the twin lips of the seal are "opposing". Just kinda like two lips about 2-3 mm close to each other with ONE garter-spring above them.

Wouldn't a seal with *two* opposing lips would have *two* garter springs with a dividing wall between them?

Am I using a less than ideal seal? Help !

Looks like that seal is to small. Seal reads 25x52x7
Should either be 30x52x7 or 28x52x7.
Measure the crank stub, widest part of the stub that goes into the seal.

I don t know 28 or 30mm stubs at the left side ... my 400/430 cc crankshafts from 81/82/83/84/85 are 25mm. Seal works well, and the bike is running well up to top rmp again.

Looks like a sleeve fitted in that photo above. That would explain the smaller seal diameter.

where can you buy these so called viton red seals with this double lip ? I have had a problem with this same side seal failing after a rebuild in the past maybe the brand of seal ive been using is the culprit ...

I went to Husqvarna-parts.com for the crank seals and gasket set. Using PayPal they were easy to deal with and quick to deliver.
My only concern, (And I hope to get ahold of someone by phone next week), is whether the seals are Viton or not.
I'm an industrial mechanic and I know Viton material seals used to exclusively be formulated in a red color. However, I also believe Viton can be gotten in black pigment as well in recent times.
It does add to confusion and question the authenticity of construction when black is delivered, (as I got).
For peace of mind, and fairness, I want to validate what I bought.
( The photo of the seal on the website is not red, *but* it also does not look like what I got).

I got Viton valve seals for my TT500 that were blue as I recall. If they were not specified as Viton on the website, then they are likely not. Seals will last a good amount of time as long as the do not sit for long periods of time and are frequently run at full operating temperature

I think what George was referring to is the main seal is either 28X52X7 or 30X52X7. The 28 or 30 is the measurement of the diameter of the clutch side of the crank that the seal rides on (shown below). I think the 25mm you are referring to is the mag side seal which is 25X35X7 that fits into the case saver.
