• Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

LED turnsig/tail light replacement woes.......

Well - I bought a very nice Edge smoked LED tail light, and a set of F & R 90 degree bendable smoked LED turnsignals for the '08 610SM. Got to fitting everything.........had to fabricate a mounting bracket to get the tail light positioned where it looked good.

Jury-rigged the wiring prior to hard-wiring it, just to make sure all was as intended to be. Here's where I went astray...........I turned on the ignition to check my work - Lo and Behold, tail & plate lights, but no turn signals or stoplight function.

I re-checked everything - it's not roket science, after all. You've got hot leads color coded for their purpose, and a common ground for all. No matter what I did - I still didn't have turnsigs or a stop light. I even went as far as to re-wire the original parts back in place. Nada.

I'm here to tell you folks who are doing LED replacement projects - THE BIKE HAS TO BE STARTED/RUNNING TO HAVE TURNSIGNAL/STOPLIGHT FUNCTION****************************************! Double DOH!

Oh well.............live and learn.

Yepers, I did something like that. It was the kill switch, Bike would not start and I started to panic, took me about 2 minutes to figure it out.
 
"Race Bike" electrics....................

All my other bikes have complete electrical function w/just the ignition switch on - I really felt dopey when I discovered that the 610SM is set up race-style. To make matters worse - my project was wired properly right from the get-go.........ah, well.

Anyhow........here's some piccys of the completed project - I think it cleans the bike up nicely:

PALMER84ONE, Yes, they are Lanesplitters (the foldable version) from McCoy motorsports - they sell them as inexpensively as I could find. Also, if you're thinking about a set, RhinoMoto makes barend weights specifically grooved for the CRGs: http://www.e-securedsite.com/RHINOMOTO/store/myProducts.cfm

HUSKYnXJnWI, thanks......it turned out pretty well - although the Edge setup was initially a LONG way from being bolt-up. Everybody pretty much knows going in............aftermarket farkles can sometimes require just a little bit of "fitment". :banghead:
 
Got a pic of how you mounted the DRC? I really like how it came out, well done sir. I had one on my DR-Z400SM and it was a great add. Thanks for the info, sir.

Doug, the LED unit I used is different than the one for the DRZ - I had the Edge on my Z, and fitted the Edge II to the 610. The Edge II has a plastic housing that I utilized to mount the turnsignals......I just drilled two holes in the housing.

First pic is of the Edge II LED taillight unit - Wheeling Cycle supply sells them.........$59.95?

If you look at the second pic, you'll see that the whole unit needed to move rearward to align with the edge of the fender. I fabricated the U-shaped bracket (from aluminum flatbar) that is mounted in the rear of the original mounting bracket.................so that I had something to mount the Edge II on.

After that, it's a simple matter of positioning/shimming/spacing until you're satisfied with the placement relative to the fender. I used all stainless hardware/fasteners - no rust later on. The flat piece of aluminum stock (license plate) is only because the temporary tag bent in the wind..........it'll come off when the permanent plate arrives.

I stashed some extra length of wiring (in case I want to revert back to stock) in that round tubing you see under the fender - then taped the ends and wire-tied it to the original mounting bracket.

Hope this helps.........if you decide to go with the Edge II, you could PM me if you want some more mounting tips.

Fred, you, once again, have helped me out. Thanks. I loved the DRC light, but the stocker isn't too bad, still mulling this one over. I will surely change the signals out, so again, thanks.
 
Fred, looking good. Did you use an LED relay in your setup? If so, did you buy the DRC IC relay from Wheeling also?

nm_moto, I was advised that the 2008 610SM already has an electronic flasher relay - so I didn't replace mine. It does blink faster than the OEM rate, so I may replace it. I'd like to find one that is compatible with the stock Husqvarna wiring/mounting - haven't found one yet.

I disassembled my stock flasher to get the connector off of it. I wired that connector to an aftermarket flasher, so I still have plug-in capability on the bike. You do have to destroy the stock unit to do this, though.

Yossarian, that's what I always do with aftermarket tail lights/turnsigs - cut the stock connectors from the original units & splice them to the replacements. That way, you can just plug into the stock unaltered wiring harness. You would think that someone would make an appropriately-configured replacement flasher, though. All the replacement electronic flashers I've seen differ not only in connection format, but also in size and shape. I'd really like to be able to keep it in the same location - under the left sidecover on the same mount. I don't think those square-shaped ones will fit there.

I'm gonna keep looking - maybe something will turn up.
 
Size matters...................

The one I used is a little cube; I ziptied it to the location of the stock unit and it fit just fine.

Yossarian, good info to know - thanks. I may just "Let it Be".....my Wifey says that the faster blink rate makes the turnsigs more visible. :excuseme:

That's what I'm going to do, too. I just have to figure out what to do with the 3d wire that comes on the IC relay from Wheeling. The OEM only has two wires. I'm guessing the 3d wire will be a ground.

Also, that relay on the left side of the subframe is the ONLY relay I've found for flashers.....am I missing something or is that the only one.

It will be interesting to see if you can get the "3 wire" relay to work.

I believe the relay on the Huskys (which is the one on the left) is in series with the signals and does not need a ground.
Be careful not to short out anything expensive.:D
