• Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Leaking front brake reservoir

The front brake reservoir has begun to leak around the lid/cover on my bike.
I had this same problem with my old X-Challenge which had the same one, I assume from Brembo.
I can not believe they still have this problem.

Anyone elses leaking?
 
I found mine weeped a little the first thousand miles (probably overfilled a bit at the factory), wiped it off, and it hasn't weeped/leaked since. I've had this happen on 2 other motorcycles I've owned--including not only brakes, but clutch reservoirs as well. Not uncommon.
 
Yep, I second what Ignacio said - not uncommon.

BTW Matt, I was pleasantly surprised to recognise you here. You have no idea who I am but I have enjoyed watching you exploits in the IBR for the last few years.

hasenpfeffer got it right. A good reason to wander a continent for 11 days, see MANY sites, compete against a hundred other similarly whacky riders, and eat a dinner at the end to see who finished where. My most recent report is here.

...I had a bit of weeping from my FJR reservoir during that rally too. :)
 
I have to say that this is odd to me.
I have owned more than a few disc brake bikes over the past 30+ years and only 2 have had leaky reservoirs.
Both with the same BMW/brembo set up.

None of my others have.
 
Yep, first leak around 4000 miles handlebars off for new ones...then at 14000 miles. The kickstand got me (my fault my foot) after a long kitesurfing session....bike went down no damage to bike just tip of board. Any time the res is at any angle lower then 45...it leaks on my bike...take it off clean it and tighten it, and it goes away.

Arrghhh....
This freaking thing is leaking like a sieve now.
Every day on the ride into work it is dripping wet, not so bad in the evening.
I have taken the lid and diaphragm off numerous times now, cleaned and retightened but it keeps leaking.
I have tried different amounts of torque on the screws from barely tight to fairly tight, nothing seems to stop it.
I don't see any holes in the diaphragm, but there is fluid on top of it every time I open it.

Any ideas?
Replacement diaphragm?
 
I don't think so. It has less fluid than I usually set my bikes with.
I did a flush a while back and I put it at just under 1/2 way through the window when you have it level in all planes.
It was more full than that from the factory, right up near the top of the window.

Just chiming in. Mine has wept since new a year ago. Just dampness showing on the reservoir. I have cleaned the sealing rubber and re-tightened the screws, but now I just wipe it from time to time. I have not had to fill the reservoir at all.

Ditto, I know the seal leaks a bit but never had to fill it. Just shows some of the fluid weeping onto the reservoir body.
 
In case there is some confusion, I have not had to add fluid.
I did a brake fluid flush a while back and when I did I set the level lower than it was originaly.
 
Yep My bike is the Same as all above from day one was leaking so every now and again i have to wipe it.. only just now in the last month I've had to bleed the master cylinder from the top Allan key part as it gets the smallest air bubble and the front brakes no longer usable but there is more then enough fluid in the reservoir. i can feel slowly the loss of breaking over time & use, till i have to bleed it again and it all comes good just like new.. some times there is no visible air bubble..

last week i had enough of doing this so i flushed out the whole system with new fresh fluid unopened seal from the shop.. its been a week now and i can feel it slowly getting softer...

is there something i'm doing wrong?.. i've done a lot of cars, 4x4s and bike breaks before. very easy.
 
My bike has been in garage storage for 2 months on kickstand... Just looked at res and noticed same (small) amount of moisture on res that many riders are having. Level is still good with same braking power as i remember.
Porous gasket?
