  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Kickstarter pawl engagement mod.

Anyone know how to get the kickstarter to engage sooner?

I may also need to rebuild my pawl and related parts.

Who sells these parts?

Fantastic , helpful video , doggg ! I wish I had seen it before I did this mod on my bike . It would have saved some frustration . It really helped to get my 84 CR500 spinning over better . Now if somebody could just figure out a way to get more revolution from early 70's Husky kickers !

I actually went on my smart phone to view it.

Can you tell me how far forward to move the pawl ramp angle to help it engage a little sooner?

I like the dog leg lever so i dont need to be on a milk crate to boot it.

Britt from Husqvarna restorations told me he removes 5/8" from the angled portion to give you a little more throw.

What do you think ?
Is the aluminum starter a better set up for starting and i am sure that it is much lighter right?

Hi Huskydoggg,

That video is great. I did move the kick start round one spline which work well for a bit until an ignition issue (kicked back a number of times) damaged the kick start paw.. I think that engaging earlier gives a better chance of spinning up the motor so it fires... something that on a 500 is needed.

I just finished advancing the ramp angle about 2-3 mm and that should translate to maybe 1 inch of extra travel.
I may go with the aluminum starter but i am afraid that it will put the start point too high, what do you think?

I think it depends on how long your legs are and the technique you use... I think it's a personal thing.

I am 5' 10" and I don't 'stab' at the starter. I tend to lean the bike over a bit and then jump up if I have nothing to stand on.

Fantastic clip. This will forsure help me, as I'm close to doing this on both my Husky's.

Also, love the gorgeous poochie at the end. I used to have a large Alaskan Malamute, and will likely bring another into my care, down the road a bit.

Thanks for the clip, really appreciate the help.

Would also be cool to see comparisons on a stock bracket, vs a slightly modified one, and the net effect at the kicker.
