So I killed my TE. Not sure what the problem was but it died on me a couple weeks ago out on the trail. Dealer tells me a piece of the piston broke off and caused all kinds of mayhem - top end is toast and he suspects the bottom end will need work as well.

So, what are my options at this point ? They tell me a new engine is 6K give or take (which is very close to the 310 the service manager seems intent on selling me but that's another story). How much should I be looking at to split the cases and re-build the bottom and top end ? Worth it ?

Rest of the bike is in good condition so how much can I expect if I part it out do you think ?

Rebuilt motor should cost around $2500-$3500k depending on what is needed. If the barrel and head are salvagable then you just need a crank, piston/rings, valves and guides. Thats $1500 in parts, and then 10-12 hours of labor.

Might want to look for a parted out motor if you need a barrel or head.

Might as well add a cam chain, etc.

Parting it out wont get you far. Blown motors are about $500. Maybe a bit more, but not much (l looked into it).

Chassis without wheels--i recently bought one for $400. Everything but the motor and wheels.

Wheels? Maybe $300 each? Thats$1500.$3000 and you have a $4500 used '06 TE450.

For the same $3000 you can rebuild that motor and have your fresh bike back.

PM me if you want advice about where to ship your motor for a good value rebuild.
Just some ideas. Personally--if you like the bike, i think you should have it rebuilt. $6k for a new motor is silly, IMHO.

I would not dump 6K into an 06. You'll not be ahead $$ wise. You will need to fix it yourself or part it out. That really sux man. I bet you can fix it for less than half that if you do the work. I would see what they will give you trade in.

Really, though, sucks to hear it. If it were me, I probably would part it out. It would take a lot of time since you would probably have to sell individual engine components. I guess it all depends on how much you owe on it. It seems like once something goes catastrophically wrong with an engine, new problems just keep showing up even after you think its fixed.

What is the current situation? Is it sitting 1/2 torn apart at dealer? 1/2 torn apart at your home?

Another idea is to buy another bike compatible with your 2006 TE450 and you could use that for spare parts. Possibly you could get a TC450 and use that engine or some of the parts from it.

I'll assume you have a few miles on the bike. If you want to console yourself browse some forums for other brands.

I think there's a lot of other options out there. I would pack up the motor and send it to an experienced Husky motor mechanic and have them assess the situation.

just out of interest, how many hours were on the engine? i am coming up on 90 hours on mine. i havent checked the maintenance schedule but I have in my head the idea that the piston and big end need to be checked or replaced at 100 hours.

Do many people follow that, i know before i have never done it because i have always sold the bike after 1 year so never had to get into any of that work. This year i have hung on to it so i will probably cross 120-130 hours before its sold, take a chance riding it til it pops or do the work ?
..or turn it into a 310 and keep it for another few years?

I know there are lots of bikes out there that are far older than my '07. However, I use the same strategy. After 2 years, I want something new anyways and some lucky guy (or gal) gets my well-maintained bike. I fix stuff as it happens. Just as I am doing now. Cleaning and maintainence comes with the package when buying a performance machine & I keep mine clean and manitained. In fact, my wife says that I enjoy washing and working on my bikes more than I enjoy "quality time" with her. It's cheaper and far less complicated for sure, so she may be onto something, but when I find a new love, I just send off my old one with another man (or woman). Someone gets to drive off with an awesome used bike and a big fat smile and I get to make room for a new one.

In this case, I have noticed that there is some good money in parting out the bike-escpecially on major parts like wheels, engine cases, exhaust, etc. I would cut my losses, try to get what I can for the bike, buy the new 310 and take the money from the parts and deck that baby out from one end to the other. I'm talking bars, guards, stabilizers, graphics-you name it.

Or...the other option is, you could buy my bike (60 hrs) and I would have some leverage with my wife when I go down and pick up that new TXC-450 or WR-300 that my dealer started polishing on when he saw me pull up to the dealership the other day (still can't decide).

I don't think that's outrageous. I think that's a sales strategy...

thats pretty interesting, how far do you go with the parting out..sell an entire engine if its ok or strip it right down to cylinder, head, cases etc? calipers clutch all that stuff? seat, bars?
does it take long to shift the lot ?
