• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

K&N Air Filter

It shows a filter and a block of foam...whats the deal with the foam?

If you read the Installation PDF it's just a restrictor which sits inside the filter to restrict airflow to factory levels. Using the filter without the foam block will allow maximum airflow.

Gee you must be rich, chuck some this way :D
(edit: this does not seem to have the foam sealing we need. Might be able to glue something in however.)

I found some for $43 including shipping. (google shopping) Power sports has em for 38 plus shipping. 2 on ebay for 39 free ship.

I was thinking about getting one, but alas, when I pulled my filter to get dimensions I found all sorts of issues with the configuration of our airbox/filter assemblies. I do not like how the filter mates to the airbox. Those 3 screws have to force the filter against the surface at a 90 degree push. Not good.

But to my surprise, when I pulled it, my filter was chock full of sand. Not a little quite a bit. As you may remember I dumped it in sand awhile back and evidently the sand pushed through the plastics. was getting past the filter, to a small degree, and I hope I did not damage my motor on the drive back. This is the most absolutely ignorant air filter setup I have ever seen, heck my lawnmower is better.

So, I must design and fab something that lets me sleep better.

Hang on. IF you have the same model TR650 as me, there is an airbox opening in the front plastic big enough for a child to stick their hand in providing unimpeded airflow through to the air filter. What makes you think that the sand pushed through the plastics to get into the filter? It is quite plausible that if you decked the bike in sand on the RHS, sand could have gone into the air intake and might have the potential to get past the filter if the filter was dislodged due to the bike no longer being upright. However, realistically, once past the filter, with the bike upright, anything has to go upwards to proceed further into the airbox, and I have doubts that something the size of a grain of sand, with airflow dampened by a filter, could get the velocity to be blown further into the airbox. Just my opinion. I might be misguided.

So, if you had the choice between the foam Uni and the cotton K&N....which would you choose?
I think the K&N will flow better and the Uni will filter better. I have already bought uni bulk foam filter stock and prefilter foam for a custom filter.

Other wise, I would recommend the pre filter foam sheet, the coarse foam, wedged infront of the filter as some others have mentioned. I would do that regardless of which stock replacement filter, due to the lousy design of the filter holder to airbox setup.

Same dimms as ours?

The KN is a bit shorter. Otherwise seems to be OK. I double checked the bmw part number and looked at pictues of the genuine bmw filters and they look like ours. I don't get why there is no foam seal on the KN. I may go to BMW tomorrow and physically check. They may even stock the KN. But this is for the xcountry, 13717659972 and a couple similar models.

Let me clarify, the sand got forced past the red and black plastic, may have even come in the actual inlet. But I am digging sand out of every crevasse of the body panels on that side. Only tiny bits seem to be past the filter, but yes, there is plenty of vacuum to pull sand into the engine if it passed the filter housing. Hopefully if it did, it passed right out the tailpipe.

The pleats were fairly full, so airflow suction sure will pull sand.

I may buy one of them borescopes I have been dying to have for so long. Harbor Freight sells some fairly cheap, and seem OK.

You could still silicone it in place like others have done with the factory and Uni filter right?
The silicon will not seal where the filter hits the housing, only the holder. The grease mentioned in other threads and sites would be recommended on these. As our bikes age and the plastic dries and distorts, this is going to be a worse issue later. All my other bikes had the airbox under the seat, out of harms way, out of the weather and sealed in a much more practical way. I have never seen such a retarded setup, and hard to access too.

The grease is highly recommended, as it will aid in the install and removal of filter assembly by letting it slide.

Here is what happened to mine. The foam rolled and tore either on install or removal.

Ugh! I'm going to order a filter and pick up some grease TOMORROW********************************************************************************!!!

This is yet another part of why these designs are bad, and the UNI an KN do not fix this. The top edge of the filter has nothing to seal against in the airbox. NOTHING, don't believe me, check yourselves.

The filter hits on 3 faces, and then allegedly on that top edge, not the face. That is a big problem for me. I figured I did have a little time to create a solution, but as I have found out, I may have damaged my engine with sand from a spill. There is sand past the filter, but I do not know for sure if that is only from removal of the filter. I highly recommend the foam pre filter. I will not run without it, if I use the stock config.

I did run without the pre foam, and guess what? You know it, I may suffer the consequences of the poor design. Needless to say, I am not a happy camper tonight after pulling it.

Looks like BMC makes a filter as well (searched 2010 BMW G650 XCOUNTRY as noted on the K&N fitment guide for their BM-6507 filter)
