The voices in my head have been telling me this for a year or more. Joe just got back from Finland ISDE, thinks it's too big a task (How can you argue with a guy who just saw the whole thing?). What do you think?
I'll preface this with a couple of things.... 1. I'm not Al Eames and never will be. I might start the ball rolling, but more capable people will run these events. I will be there to help it along.
2. If this spurs people to think somewhere else in the US can be done, then go for it.
It's been a long time since the ISDE has been in the US, so being a big fan of the event... I wonder is it possible in the US? The Hancock US WEC (Now EWC) events were awesome. Mexico used a EWC event as a precursor to their ISDE, so that could be a possibilty. I'll speak mostly to the ISDE, but the EWC could be a smaller scale dress rehearsal for the big one.
I attended the FIM Enduro Seminar at AMA Headquarters in Ohio. It covered all the ISDE, EWC and FIM Indoor Enduro rules. I passed my test with a score high enough to receive a Clerk of the Course and Sporting Steward licenses. Alan King from Wales was our instructor and a terriffic guy. He was hopeful that Wales would host the 2013 ISDE, bringing the 100th Anniversary of the Sixs Days back to Great Britain where it began. Unfortunately, this was not to be, as the econimic climate in GB and Wales made it so financial support was not to be had. I corresponded with Alan and he sent me the FIM application for the ISDE... a daunting document.
On to the good... The Location would be Cortland County, NY. It is located about four hours from NYC on Interstate 81. The city of Syracuse and its International Airport is nearby. The cities of Cortland, Binghampton and Ithaca are nearby. Greek Peak Ski Resort would be the center of event. This supplies the level of hotel rooms the FIM wants, as well as the other infrastructure needed. Cortland State University could possibly be the location for opening and closing ceremonies. Greek Peak will be hosting their first off road race later this month.
For the event course and special tests. A large portion (7 of 13) of the WNYOA Hare Scrambles Series is clustered close to this area. The Speedsville Enduro Course is also in the area and Broome-Tioga Raceway, former host of an AMA MX National is nearby to hold the Day 6 Moto final. It also has a Hare Scrambles Course which could be included in a loop. Bob Agonis owns land nearby, which could be a special test section. A couple of other small ski resorts could possibly provide special tests and a couple of private landowners who had races in the past. All the land would be privately owned and the only State Land would be possibly riding improved roads (no trails) through State forest for transfer sections.
I believe that the State and Local Governments would like to bring a World Class Event to this area for the economic benefit it would bring.
The bad.... Who's going to run this thing? The AMA will be responsible for oversight as the National Federation, but they don't really organze or run it. Although WNYOA (Which I am a member/enduro rider) is a large organization, it's not a strong enduro one. 1200+ members and less than 100 who ride enduros. It is mainly a bike and quad Hare Scrambles Series, WNYOA has a 9 enduro series, but 7 of them are ECEA Co-Sanctions. I'm just starting to gauge WNYOA interest in this respect. ECEA and NETRA are other close by organizations, but will they come foward to help. I spoke to Jerry Shinners of NETRA and he thought they would come foward. If WNYOA, ECEA and NETRA with their constituent Clubs come together and Club members from all over the US, there might be enough help. As I said in my other post, some people don't think it can be done and maybe it can't. Some people think that only Racer Productions with their GNCC and MX promoting experience could really do it.
