  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Intermittent Starting Problem

Greetings all. I've encountered a starting problem that I wonder if anyone else out there has had happen to them. I recently purchased a 2011 TE250 that was a demo bike from corporate. It had a little more than 500 miles on it and it had been powered up. I've put on another 300 miles on it on the little trail system my wife made up on her parents' 10 acres, as well as the two organized trail rides I've been on in the past month.

Whenever I take a break on my rides, I usually turn off the bike with the kill switch, get a drink, talk with co-riders, scold my children for cutting me off, whatever, before firing it back up to keep on riding. But the last two times I've been out I've had starting issues. The first time was at my in-laws' place. After about a half hour of riding I turned my bike off to get a drink, but when I tried to restart it only cycled and didn't turn on. I turned the bike off for a minute and it started up like normal and I had no other incident that day. I had shut off and restarted several other times that day with no incident either.

This last time got me worried, though. I was on the Whiskey Creek Classic in Custer, Michigan when after 80 miles of riding in five hours, I turned the bike off at a rest stop, only to have it not restart when it was time to go. I tried kicking it on with no success. I let it rest a minute before trying again with no success. Several times I let it rest a minute but it would not start. I had accumulated eight riders at the stop trying to figure out what was wrong, some giving carburetor advice since they didn't know my Husky was fuel injected. Finally someone else hopped on and after two kicks got it started. There was no other problems on the shortened trip back via the roads. And I've never had any problem with the bike dying while running.

Anyone else encounter this kind of problem? Afterwards I thought maybe my bike was overheating, but since hindsight is 20/20 I didn't think of checking if the fan ever came on.

Thanks for any and all advice.

Steve

Yes : MY11TE250 Did the same thing have 40 hrs on it. i just had the txc racing ecu and injector installed and tps reset at dealer ! rode a couple short rides all good ! took bike on camping trip rode trails for about 1 hour stoped to take a break turned key off to kill motor. noticed gas bubbling up into vent hose: btw have clear gas cap vent hose. thought this was wierd so tried to start the bike but would not start . removed cap turned key on fuel pump sounds wierd and making lot of bubbles in tank . temp out side was around 90 me and the bike was both hot but the fan has been working ! tried to kick start no go, tried push button no go ! let it sit and cool for 20 min. push button and starts. rode back to camp no problem. gas in tank was on the bottom 1/3 was thinking fuel pump was hot so filled with gas and runs fine, but have not rode it hard and hot since this has happened. dealer says he has had this before and thinks it is the fuel pump . but wants me to ride it to see if it happens again . so far to busy with work and the farm to ride , just hate that a new bike has these problems ! should not have to replace fuel pump every 40 to 60 hrs !

Possible a bad temp sensor for both of you. I had similar problems, replaced the temp sensor(known to go bad) haven't had a problem since.

I have a similar problem. I put it in gear roll it back and forth and then put it in neutral and it will usually fire up. Also need to pull in the little red lever sometimes.

I took my bike out today and had the same problem happen. I rode on the streets for about 15 minutes at not more than 45mph to get to my in-laws' place. I turned my bike off to help my two kids get their gear on so they could do some trail riding. My bike started up just fine. It did feel a little weird, like it was lurching a little bit when I was using the clutch in the slow places, but it ran just fine in the spots I was gunning it trying to learn how to pop a wheelie. After my attempt I have to break hard and use the clutch to make a slow sharp turn in sand when I went too slow and stalled it five minutes in. Then it wouldn't restart. I didn't even hear the fuel pump priming. Naturally this was the farthest spot in the trail. Luckily the 250 is only 250lbs, so I was able to push it back to the house. I left it for a few minutes and tried restarting, but again no fuel pump sound when I turned it on. I did finally get it to turn over a few times, but it immediately died. After a good ten or fifteen minutes it started up just fine. I trailered it home and it started just fine. I even took it around the block with no problems. My wife's now wondering if it's a temperature sensor issue. I have a family trail ride planned in a month's time, so I better find a solution way before then.

If you didn't hear the fuel pump prime, you may want to try swapping the relays as well. You should have 2 or 3 hanging off the subframe under the seat and one works with the fuel pump. It could possibly be faulty. Check and/or swap out your fuses as well. Those are a couple of cheap/easy places to start.

I had two separate husky experts tell me that I have the problematic temperature sensor, and replacing it will cure what ails me. I guess I'll find out after my next long ride :)

Have a 2012 te310 with 250mi. and have had same starting problem when hot,,several times almost draining battery attempting restart

Alas, the easy and inexpensive fix didn't correct the problem. Riding this weekend caused a repeat of my bike's inability to restart when hot. I guess it's the fuel pump, which is naturally the hard and expensive fix :(

My dealer is reflashing my te310,2012,can't imagine how this will help hot start problem.
I certainly miss my drz400

11' TXC 250- Last time I rode it was hot out. After about two hours of riding, I shut it off and it would not restart (first time ever). Used the "red lever" and it started. Had to use the hot start every time after that all day. It worried me. but I've done nothing to remedy the situation. Is it odd to have to use the hot start?

That's actually an enrichening lever for starting your bike when cold. You shouldn't use it when the bike is hot. How many miles/hours on it? Perhaps your intake valves are getting a bit tight?

I bought the bike new in Oct. I've probably got a bit over 100 hours on it. It did the same thing today after about an hour of riding. It was cool out. It seems to be running great after it starts. Is that a symptom of tight intake valves? Thanks

Have you checked your valve clearance since you've had the bike? If you're riding MX the manual says to check every 16 hrs. For enduro every 32 hrs.
It's a simple procedure. You just need some fairly long feeler guages.

Have not checked the clearance at all. Last question, promise. Is there a manual available beyond the nerd stick I got with the bike? Thank you.

Federal Lemon Law! This is BS! Enough is enough! To many problems with these bikes and the Federal Law will kick in! The other thing is if you live in a state that has Lemon Law rights also. Cool thing is if you hire an attorny you pay nothing win or loose!

Well, after a fuel pump change my bike now runs great! I took it out on the Cycle Conservation Club of Michigan's Capital Chapter's "Kids Ride" this weekend, in the heat and sand and the pump primed every time, even after I *ahem* dropped it a few times in the sand. Funny thing is that there was a TE511 in the shop at the same time with the same problem. Seeing the price for the swap I'm soooo happy it was covered under warranty.

Ya the Ethanol is really a problem...the local KTM dealer in San Antonio is selling Startron...for the fuel. The KTM's have the same issues with the FI systems... I just started adding it to my gas...here's the site...http://www.startron.com

George told me last week...that the Ethanol in the gas creates more havic...with carbed bikes.
