Hi Mike,
You do have to remove the tank, I don't completely unbolt the shrouds just where they connect to the front of the bike and the bottom bolt, then I just move the shrouds out a bit, and lift the tank slightly at the rear, just enough so I can get to the QD fuel connector. From there I depress the two buttons on the QD, sometimes I have to use a screwdriver to depress one side, and gently remove it off of the tank, there is also and electrical connection right by the QD you have to unclip. There is one more electrical connector under the right side of the tank, it usually has a zip tie on it to keep it connected, remove the zip tie and unclip it as well. From there you should be able to remove the tank. The ECU is right under the tank and it is easily removed, as is the fuel injector it is held on by two philips head screws, they are a real PIA to get loose they are supposedly some Japanese standard heads?, I used set of vice grips to get mine off, then I replaced the two philips head screws with some stainless allen head screws from the local hardware store. I think that is about it, nothing really to it, and the bike runs so much better with it installed. I left my resistor in the lambda sensor, and my blue mode switch still works great. I forgot to mention there is a cross over fuel line from the right and left fuel petcocks that needs to be removed I removed mine from the left side, and replaced the crimp style hose clamp with a fuel injector style hose clamp from Napa, although I think a standard one might work fine at that junction as well. I removed the throttle body to get those PIA screws loose, and I think that was the proper way to do it, otherwise I am not sure you would ever get them loose. Its no different than remove a carb from any other bike, the throttle cables hook up the same way.
